Giblin Records an RBI as Baseball Hosts Pace

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 18, 2023) – Despite an RBI from senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt), the Mercy College baseball team dropped 3-1 and 13-0 decisions to regionally-ranked Pace University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-15) have dropped four games in a row, while the Setters (13-2) have won three straight games.

Game 1: Pace 3, Mercy 1

The Setters took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first following a sacrifice fly after a leadoff triple by Matthew Rinaldi.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth when Luke Rivara homered to give Pace a 2-0 lead.

Mercy scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 2-1. Sophomore Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) singled and later scored on a Giblin RBI single through the left side to make it 2-1.

Pace scored a run in the top of the seventh on a Rinaldi RBI double to make it 3-1.

The Mavericks would not score in the bottom of the seventh and the Setters earned the game one win.

Giblin went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Asaro went 1-for-2 with a run. Junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 1-for-3 and graduate student Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) allowed two runs in six innings to take the loss.

Pace was led by Rinaldi who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Patrick Gleason pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Mercy had three hits and no errors and Pace had eight hits and one error.

Game 2: Pace 13, Mercy 0

After a scoreless first inning, Pace scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Setters added five more runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-0 lead. Mitchell McCabe hit a two-run home run and Benjamin Tullo hit a three-run home run in the inning.

The Setters tacked on five more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 13-0 lead. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to give Pace the game two win.

Freshman Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) went 2-for-3 and freshman Marcos Feliz (Boston, Mass./Southern New Hampshire University) and sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) both went 1-for-1. Freshman Niko Sorice (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) went 1-for-2 and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) allowed three runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.

Pace was led by Tullo who went 3-for-4 with five RBI. Vincent Civitella pitched six innings to earn the win.

Mercy had five hits and two errors and Pace had nine hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Pace at 12 p.m.
