DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2023) – Despite eight different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College baseball team dropped 20-7 and 9-6 decisions to ECC foe Molloy University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-18, 0-3 ECC) have dropped seven games in a row and remain winless in ECC play, while the Lions (15-8, 3-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.
Game 1: Molloy 20, Mercy 7
Molloy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a JJ DeVito leadoff home run. Mercy struck for three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) brought home the first run of the inning on a triple to center field, scoring sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) to tie the game at 1-1. Giblin later scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1. Senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) brought home the final run of the inning on a single to right center to give Mercy a 3-1 lead.
The Lions answered with five runs in the top of the second to take a 6-3 lead. Molloy added seven more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the eighth to build a 19-3 lead.
Mercy scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 19-6. Freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) doubled home the first run of the inning and freshman Diego Wirz (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) plated the second run on a sacrifice fly to make it 19-5. McAdams later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Lions lead to 19-6.
Molloy scored their final run in the top of the ninth to make it 20-6. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch to make it 20-7, but the deficit proved too much to overcome and Molloy earned the game one win.
Giblin went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Glennerster went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Jared Hernandez (Moca, P.R./Friends University) went 1-for-4 and sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 3-for-5. McAdams went 1-for-4 with an RBI and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) went 1-for-4. Senior Ryan Gonzalez (Howell, N.J./Neumann University) went 1-for-1 and sophomore Connor Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) went 1-for-2. Graduate student Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) allowed six runs in two innings to take the loss.
Molloy was led by DeVito who went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Brian Morrisey pitched seven innings with three runs allowed to earn the win.
Mercy had 13 hits and no errors and Molloy had 21 hits and one error.
Game 2: Molloy 9, Mercy 6
Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Caballero and Giblin both singled and later scored on a Joseph Gonzalez RBI single to make it 2-0. Junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) plated Gonzalez with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Molloy scored two runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2.
The Mavericks scored two more runs in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) doubled and scored on a Hernandez double to make it 4-2. Caballero then singled home Hernandez to give Mercy a 5-2 lead.
Molloy inched closer with a run in the bottom of the second on a Stephen Collica home run to make it 5-3. The Lions added a run in the fourth inning to make it 5-4 after a Thomas Lebrecht RBI single.
The Lions took their first lead of the game at 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth on a Gavin McAlonie two-run home run. Mercy tied the game at 6-6 with a run in the top of the sixth on one hit.
Molloy scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-6 lead and Mercy went down in order in the top of the seventh to give the Lions the game two win.
Joseph Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with two RBI and Hernandez went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Caballero went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Sanders went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Giblin went 1-for-4 with a run and freshman John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 2-for-3. Asaro went 1-for-1 with a run and junior Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) allowed six runs in five innings to earn a no-decision. Wirz allowed two earned runs in 0.2 inning to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Jake McCarthy who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Mike Andreoli pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had 10 hits and one error and Molloy had 12 hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Molloy at 3:30 p.m.
