Asaro Records an RBI as Baseball Plays at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Mar. 8, 2023) – Despite an RBI from sophomore Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision to regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (2-11) have dropped eight games in a row and fall to the Owls (7-2) for the third straight time this season.

Asaro went 2-for-4 with his first RBI of the season and freshman Niko Sorice (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) went 2-for-3. Junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 1-for-3 and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Seniors Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) and Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) both went 1-for-4. Sophomore Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) pitched 5.1 innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss. Senior Ryan Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) and graduate student Ryan DeMille (Millstone, N.J./Dominican College) combined to toss 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Southern Connecticut State was led by Colin Mason who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Tommy Benincaso pitched five innings with one run allowed to earn the win.

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an Andrew Eng RBI double to center field. The Mavericks would tie the game in the top of the second. Schoen singled and Ramirez later singled to put runners on first and second. Asaro then singled up the middle to score Schoen, tying the game at 1-1. A groundout to the pitcher ended the inning.

The score stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Mason doubled home a run to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Southern Connecticut State tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead.

Mercy was unable to score again giving the Owls the 6-1 win.

Mercy had eight hits and one error and Southern Connecticut State had 10 hits and one error.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 10th when they host Bridgeport at 1 p.m.
