McAdams Records Go-Ahead Three-Run Home Run in Ninth Inning as Baseball Earns 10-9 Comeback Win Over Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2023) – Powered by the go-ahead home run in the ninth inning for his first collegiate home run from freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 10-9 come-from-behind win over ECC foe Queens College on Sunday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium.

The Mavericks (11-28, 7-13 ECC) earn a season series split with the regionally-ranked Knights (26-11, 10-6 ECC).

McAdams went 5-for-6 with three RBI and his first home run. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and freshman Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) went 2-for-6 with two runs. Sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 1-for-4 with two runs and senior Ryan Gonzalez (Howell, N.J./Neumann University) went 2-for-5. Senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) went 1-for-2 and junior Gabriel Soto (Tucson, Ariz./Mesabi Range College) allowed four runs in an inning to take a no-decision. Graduate student Ryan DeMille (Millstone, N.J./Dominican College) pitched two shutout innings to earn his first win of the season.

Queens was led by Matt Filip who went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Danny Gargano allowed three runs in two innings to take the loss.

Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Caballero singled to lead off the game and later scored on a Joseph Gonzalez RBI single. The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead.

The Mavericks answered with two runs in the second inning to make it 4-3. Caballero reached on a fielder's choice and later scored after Giblin reached on an error to make it 4-2. Glennerster then singled home Giblin to cut Queens lead to one, 4-3.

Mercy tied the game at 4-4 in the third inning after Joseph Gonzalez singled and scored on an Ashline RBI single. The Knights retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-4.

Mercy regained the lead in the fourth inning, scoring two runs to take a 6-5 lead. Giblin and McAdams singled and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) grounded out to first, bringing home Giblin to tie the game at 5-5. Joseph Gonzalez then singled up the middle, scoring McAdams to give Mercy a 6-5 lead. Queens scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the inning to tie the game again at 6-6.

Queens retook the lead in the fifth inning with a run on two hits. The Knights added a run in the sixth inning to take an 8-6 lead after a Filip RBI double. Queens added another run in the seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead.

Mercy plated a run in the eighth inning to make it 9-7. Glennerster led off the inning with a single and scored after Joseph Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice.

The Mavericks headed into the top of the ninth trailing by two runs to the regionally-ranked Knights. Ashline was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Giblin singled to put runners on first and second. Glennerster reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third with two outs. McAdams then stepped up with Mercy down to their final out and hit his first career home run over the left field fence, scoring three runs to give Mercy a 10-9 lead.

The Knights put runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate by Ashline, giving Mercy the 10-9 come-from-behind win.

Mercy had 19 hits and no errors and Queens had 16 hits and three errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 25th when they play at Pace at 3 p.m.
