Ramirez Records Team-High Two RBI as Baseball Plays at D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2023) – Despite a team-high two RBI from senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose), the Mercy College baseball team dropped 5-2 and 8-4 decisions to ECC foe D'Youville University on Friday afternoon at the Medaille Sports Complex.

The Mavericks (5-25, 1-10 ECC) have dropped six games in a row, while the Saints (13-13, 5-5 ECC) improve to .500 overall and in ECC play.

Game 1: D'Youville 5, Mercy 2

Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) tripled and scored on a senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) RBI single to make it 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Saints scored a run on one hit and a Mercy error to tie the game at 1-1.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Jon Simpson home run.

The Mavericks answered with a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game again at 2-2. Giblin singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) RBI double to make it 2-2.

The teams were tied at 2-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth when the Saints scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and Ramirez singled in the ninth but were left stranded and the Saints earned the game one win.

Giblin went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Glennerster went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gonzalez, McAdams and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) all went 1-for-4. Ramirez went 1-for-1 and graduate student Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) allowed one earned run in six innings to earn a no-decision. Graduate student Ryan DeMille (Millstone, N.J./Dominican University) allowed three runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.

D'Youville was led by Simpson who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Chris Auclair pitched eight innings to earn the win. Samuel Worthen pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

Mercy had eight hits and one error and D'Youville had eight hits and one error.

Game 2: D'Youville 8, Mercy 4

Mercy took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Giblin walked with two outs and Glennerster reached on an error to put runners on first and third. Ramirez then singled, scoring Giblin to make it 1-0. Gonzalez then singled home Glennerster to make it 2-0 and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) followed with a single to score Ramirez for the final run of the inning.

The Saints scored five runs in the bottom of the first on four hits to take a 5-3 lead. D'Youville added a run in the second inning to take a 6-3 lead.

The Saints increased their lead to 8-3 in the fourth inning on a Billy Morris two-run home run. Mercy scored a run in the top of the fifth to make it 8-4. Sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and Giblin singled to lead off the inning and Caballero scored on a Ramirez sacrifice fly to make it 8-4.

Mercy could not score again and the Saints earned the doubleheader sweep.

Ramirez went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Gonzalez and Schoen went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Giblin and McAdams went 2-for-3 and Caballero and Glennerster both went 1-for-4. Junior Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) allowed five runs in 0.2 innings to take the loss. Sophomore Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) and freshman Riley Williams (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) combined to toss 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

D'Youville was led by Morris who went 1-for-4 with three RBI and pitched five innings with one earned run allowed to earn the win.

Mercy had 10 hits and one error and D'Youville had nine hits and two errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at D'Youville at 11 a.m.
