DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 4, 2023)- Powered by a complete game on the mound from sophomore Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and a game-high two RBI from senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 5-2 win over ECC foe Lincoln University on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (13-30, 8-13 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 15-0 all-time against the Lions (11-33-1, 4-17 ECC).
Scheppy allowed just one earned run and three hits with five strikeouts to earn his third win of the season. Glennerster went 3-for-5 with two RBI and senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) went 3-for-4 with three runs. Giblin recorded his 100th career run scored becoming the seventh Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and freshman Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Lincoln was led by Jaden Greenidge who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Gabriel Sanchez allowed four runs in 6.2 innings to take the loss.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Josh Shepherd RBI single. Lincoln added a run in the third inning on a Greenidge triple to make it 2-0.
Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1. Giblin singled to lead off the inning and scored on an Ashline triple.
The Mavericks scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Caballero and Giblin singled to lead off the inning and Caballero stole home while Giblin stole second to tie the game at 2-2. Glennerster then doubled to left center, scoring Giblin to make it 3-2.
Mercy added a run in the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. Giblin singled and would score on a Glennerster RBI single to center field. Mercy scored their final run in the eighth inning on a Caballero RBI double that scored freshman John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) to make it 5-2.
Scheppy did not allow a hit after the third inning and retired the Lions in order in the ninth inning to give Mercy the 5-2 win.
Mercy had nine hits and one error and Lincoln had three hits and three errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Lincoln for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
