DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 6, 2023) – Despite an RBI from sophomores Joseph Gonzalez and Connor Ruland, the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to ECC foe Lincoln University on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks honored seniors Nolan Giblin, Kevin Seckler, Justin Glennerster, Ryan Dieguez, Ryan DeMille, Isaiah Ortiz, Anthony Burgio and John Gillespie for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (15-31, 10-14 ECC) lose to the Lions (12-35-1, 5-19 ECC) for the first time. Mercy has secured their third straight ECC Tournament berth and will now play in the ECC Tournament from May 11-13 at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, New York.
Gonzalez went 1-for-1 with an RBI and Ruland went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Junior Jared Hernandez went 1-for-1 and sophomore Frankie Asaro went 1-for-3. Giblin went 1-for-3 and sophomore Jaden Caballero went 1-for-4. Ortiz went 1-for-3 and freshman Sean McAdams went 1-for-4. Gillespie allowed two runs in an inning to take the loss. Freshman Riley Williams, junior Nelson Perez Jr., sophomores Denis Garcia and Matthew Manzoeillo and Dieguez all pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Lincoln was led by DeAndre Bowens who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Josiah Bowles allowed two earned runs in 7.1 innings to earn the win.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Bowens and Jaden Greenidge. Lincoln added a run in the third inning on a Greenidge double to make it 3-0. An Alex Jones RBI single in the fourth inning gave the Lions a 4-0 lead.
Mercy made it 4-1 in the sixth inning. Giblin doubled and was pinch run for by Gonzalez. Ruland later tripled down the left field line, scoring Gonzalez to make it 4-1.
The Lions plated three runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-1 lead.
Mercy scored two runs in the eighth inning to make it 7-3. Caballero tripled and scored on a Gonzalez triple to make it 7-2. Gonzalez later scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Lincoln scored three more runs in the ninth inning to make it 10-3. Mercy could not score in the ninth inning giving Lincoln the 10-3 win.
Mercy had eight hits and three errors and Lincoln had 10 hits and no errors.
