DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2023) – Powered by a combined 23 saves from junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and sophomore Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 3 Kutztown University on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-2) fall to 0-7 all-time against the Golden Bears (5-0).
Mercy was led by Giordano who had a game-high 14 saves in the second half with just one goal allowed. McClure made nine saves in the first half and allowed four goals to take the loss. Senior Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) recorded a defensive save and senior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) recorded the first shot on goal allowed by Kutztown in five games this season.
Kutztown was led by Juliana Donato who had a goal and two assists. Mia Kepler made one save in 45 minutes of action to earn the win.
McClure made a save in the 3rd minute of action before Greenleigh McGehee scored following a penalty corner in the 4th minute to give Kutztown a 1-0 lead.
Ringstad recorded the first shot on goal allowed by the Golden Bears all season in the 5th minute, but Kepler made the save to keep the score 1-0.
Andie Sierer made it 2-0 in the 8th minute following an assist from Donato. McClure made three more saves in the quarter to keep the score 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Donato found the back of the cage in the 18th minute, following a penalty corner, to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Breann Craley added a goal in the 21st minute to give Kutztown a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Giordano made seven saves in the third quarter to keep the Golden Bears scoreless in the quarter, sending the game into the fourth quarter with Kutztown up 4-0.
Giordano made three more saves in the fourth quarter before Jordan Stroup scored in the 55th minute to give the Golden Bears a 5-0 lead. Giordano made four more saves to keep Kutztown from scoring again and the Golden Bears earned a 5-0 win.
Kutztown held a 35-1 edge in shots and a 29-1 edge in shots on goal. Kutztown also held a 21-1 edge in penalty corners. The Mavericks recorded the first penalty corner surrendered by Kutztown this season.
