Palladino and Fitzgerald Score as Field Hockey Battles Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2023) – Despite goals from seniors Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to NE10 foe Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at Motamed Field.

The Mavericks (3-4, 2-2 NE10) have dropped two games in a row and fall to 0-10 all-time against the defending NE10 Champion Panthers (3-5, 2-2 NE10).

Palladino recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the season and Fitzgerald netted her third goal of the year. Senior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dished out her team-leading fifth assist of the season and junior Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) added her first defensive save of the season. Junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made a game-high nine saves to take the loss.

Adelphi was led by Kelly Johnson who had a goal and an assist. Amanda Montiel made one save to earn the win.

Giordano made four saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless after the first quarter.

Giordano stopped two more shots in the second quarter to keep the score 0-0. Palladino gave the Mavericks the lead at 1-0 in the 23rd minute after Montiel stopped her initial shot and Palladino fired home the rebound. Giordano made another save in the 29th minute to keep Adelphi off the scoreboard, giving Mercy a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Adelphi tied the game at 1-1 just 47 seconds into the third quarter after an Amanda Lee penalty stroke. The Mavericks retook the lead at 2-1 in the 33rd minute after Fitzgerald found the back of the cage, following a Rosenfeld assist. Giordano made two more saves before Ali Nagy tied the game at 2-2 in the 39th minute. Johnson gave the Panthers their first lead of the game in the 42nd minute, making it 3-2. Adelphi headed into the fourth quarter with a 3-2 lead.

Volz came up with a defensive save in the 47th minute to keep the Mavericks within striking distance. Mercy could not find the equalizer and the Panthers earned the 3-2 win.

Adelphi held a 23-8 edge in shots and a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. Adelphi also held an 18-4 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 28th when they play at No. 8 Millersville at 6 p.m.
