Giordano and McClure Combine for 17 Saves as Field Hockey Plays at No. 8 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 28, 2023) – Despite a combined 17 saves from junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and sophomore Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision at No. 8 Millersville University on Thursday night at Biemesderfer Stadium.

The Mavericks (3-5) have dropped three games in a row, while the Marauders (5-3) snap a two-game losing streak.

Giordano made a game-high 10 saves in the first half with four goals allowed to take the loss. McClure made seven saves with one goal allowed in the second half. Seniors Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Kyra Reyes (Valley Center, Calif./San Pasqual) both recorded a defensive save and senior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) had a team-high two shots on goal.

Millersville was led by Codi Bollinger who had a goal and an assist. Kerstin Koons made two saves in the first half to earn the win.

Devlin made a defensive save just 28 seconds into the game and Giordano made a save in the 2nd minute to keep the game scoreless. Bri Harsh gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute. Ringstad forced Koons to make a pair of saves in the 8th minute of action, but the score remained 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Millersville took a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute when Gianna Cugino scored following a Bollinger assist. Giordano made four more saves to keep it 2-0 before Emma Ruley made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute. Giordano was forced to make four more stops before Caitlin Wassermann found the back of the cage in the 27th minute to give the Marauders a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.

McClure made a save and Reyes added a defensive save to keep the score 4-0 in the 40th minute. Bollinger tallied Millersville's final goal in the 41st minute to make it 5-0.

McClure stopped six shots in the fourth quarter to keep the Marauders from scoring again, but it was not enough as Millersville earned the 5-0 win.

Millersville held a 33-4 edge in shots and a 24-3 edge in shots on goal. Millersville also held a 27-6 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 30th when they host Southern New Hampshire at 2:30 p.m.
