DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2023) – Powered by a one-save shutout from junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the RV Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw with ECC foe College of Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-1-3, 2-0-1 ECC) remain unbeaten in their last seven games and earn a 0-0 draw against the Dolphins (2-3-3, 0-1-1 ECC) for the second straight year.
Elvestad made one save to earn his fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) had a game-high two shots on goal.
Staten Island was led by Luis Ascencio Cueva who had a shot on goal. Amari Thompson made a game-high seven saves to earn the shutout.
Thompson made three saves in the first half to keep Mercy off the scoreboard and a junior Luís Silva (Esposende, Portugal/Knox College) shot hit the crossbar in the 39th minute to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Mercy drew a foul in the box in the 48th minute, but Hanken Tjostheim's penalty kick was stopped by Thompson to keep the game scoreless. Senior Daniel Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Erskine College) and Silva forced Thompson to make saves in the 49th and 52nd minutes.
Elvestad was forced to make his lone save of the game in the 65th minute, keeping the game scoreless. The Mavericks drew another penalty kick attempt in the 78th minute, but sophomore Mateo Bacigalupo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Cardenal Newman) hit the crossbar and Thompson stopped the ensuing rebound to keep the score 0-0.
Neither team would record a shot in the final 10 minutes of the game and the game ended in a 0-0 draw for the second straight year.
Mercy held a 12-7 edge in shots and a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 30th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m.
