Hanken Tjostheim and Holland Combine for Five Goals as RV Men's Soccer Earns 6-2 Win at Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2023) – Powered by a combined five goals from sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) and junior Julian Holland (Tokyo, Japan/Iowa Western CC), the RV Mercy University men's soccer team earned a convincing 6-2 win at ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.

The Mavericks (5-1-3, 3-0-1 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play and are unbeaten in their last eight games. Mercy currently sits in first place in the ECC standings. The six goals scored by Mercy are a season high and the six goals are tied for the most ever scored against the Redhawks (3-4-3, 2-1-1 ECC). The Mavericks also scored six goals against Roberts Wesleyan in 2017. The victory is Head Coach Pedro Velazquez's 75th career win.

Hanken Tjostheim recorded a game-high three goals and now has a team-high six goals and 13 points on the year. Holland netted his first two goals as a Maverick and sophomore Mateo Bacigalupo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Cardenal Newman) netted his third goal of the season. Senior Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College) dished out his team-leading fourth assist of the season and senior Daniel Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Erskine College), sophomore Nicolás Cerda (Santiago, Chile/Andree English School) and junior Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio del Verbo Divino) each recorded their first assist of the season. Junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made one save in 76:23 minutes of action to earn the win. Sophomore Daniel Alvarez (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) played the final 13:37 minutes in goal without allowing a goal in his collegiate debut.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Nathan Ferguson and Myles Palmer who both scored. Caleb DaSilva allowed five goals in the first half with three saves to take the loss.

Following a penalty kick miss in the 2nd minute of action, Bacigalupo gave Mercy a 1-0 lead in just the 4th minute of action after a Fernandes assist. Holland later gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute on a penalty kick.

DaSilva stopped two shots before Holland netted his second goal of the game to make it 3-0 in the 33rd minute following a corner kick. Hanken Tjostheim continued the onslaught with his first goal of the day in the 38th minute following a Cerda assist to make it 4-0. Hanken Tjostheim gave the Mavericks a commanding 5-0 lead in the final minute of the first half, off a Penafiel assist, and Mercy headed into halftime with a 5-0 lead.

Hanken Tjostheim scored the Mavericks final goal in the 56th minute and completed the hat-trick to make it 6-0. The Redhawks scored goals in the 63rd and 77th minutes to make it 6-2, but it was not enough, and Mercy earned the impressive 6-2 road win.

Mercy held a 19-10 edge in shots and an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a 12-3 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 4th when they host Millersville at 3 p.m.
