ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2023) – Despite two saves from sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly), the Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
The Mavericks (3-3-2, 2-1-1 ECC) drop their first ECC regular season game since October 16, 2021 against Molloy and fall to the Redhawks (7-1-1, 3-0-1 ECC) for the first time since 2018.
Anaya made two saves to take the loss and junior Isabella Messina (Huntington Beach, Calif./Saddleback College) and sophomore Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) both had a shot on goal.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Larissa Johnston who scored and by Nicolette Knauf who made two saves to earn the shutout win.
The game remained scoreless until the 37th minute when Roberts Wesleyan drew a foul in the box and Johnston connected on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead. Messina recorded the Mavericks first shot on goal in the final minute of the first half, but Knauf made the stop to give Roberts Wesleyan a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Anaya made saves in the 49th and 52nd minutes to keep Mercy within striking distance. Dixon forced Knauf to make her final stop in the 61st minute, keeping the score 1-0.
The Mavericks were not able to find the equalizer and Roberts Wesleyan came away with the 1-0 win.
Roberts Wesleyan held an 11-4 edge in shots and a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 7th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 12 p.m.
