Sabert Scores Career-High Two Goals as Field Hockey Hosts Adelphi

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2024) – Despite a career-high two goals from freshman Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 7-2 decision to NE10 foe Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-3, 2-2 NE10) have dropped two games in a row and fall to 0-11 all-time against the Panthers (2-7, 2-2 NE10).

Mercy was led by Sabert who now has a team-high four goals and 10 points on the year. Sophomore Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) recorded her team-leading third assist of the season and junior Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a defensive save. Junior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) made a game-high 14 saves in 51 minutes of action to take the loss. Freshman Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) made two saves in the final 8:52 of play.

Adelphi was led by Amanda Lee who had two goals and by Tayla Szmak who made one save in 51 minutes of action to earn the win.

McClure made her first save of the game in the 1st minute of play. The score remained 0-0 until the 7th minute when Emiline Biggin scored to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. McClure stopped two more shots in the quarter to keep the score 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Lee gave Adelphi a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute. McClure stopped four more shots in the half and Lane came up with a defensive save in the quarter to keep the score at 2-0 heading into halftime.

McClure opened the third quarter with three more saves before Ali Nagy scored in the 37th minute to give Adelphi a 3-0 lead. Mercy got on the scoreboard in the 44th minute to make it 3-1. Preston fired over a cross to Sabert, who fired the ball into the cage, to make it 3-1, heading to the fourth quarter.

Jillian Riche made it 4-1 Adelphi in the 50th minute following a penalty stroke goal. Caroline Beakes followed with a goal less than a minute later to make it 5-1 and Lee scored again in the 52nd minute to give Adelphi a 6-1 lead. Sabert scored the Mavericks' final goal of the day in the 56th minute to cut the Panthers' lead to 6-2. An Isabella Zullo goal in the 58th minute made it 7-2 and capped off the scoring for the day, giving Adelphi the 7-2 win.

Adelphi held a 30-12 edge in shots and a 24-8 edge in shots on goal. Adelphi held an 18-7 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 5th when they play at No. 6 Southern New Hampshire at 1 p.m.
