MANCHESTER, N.H. (Oct. 5, 2024) – Despite a combined 18 saves from junior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) and senior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped an 8-0 decision at NE10 foe No. 6 Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.
The Mavericks (5-4, 2-3 NE10) have dropped three games in a row and fall to the Penmen (8-1, 5-0 NE10) for the sixth straight time.
Mercy was led by McClure who had a game-high 13 saves to take the loss. Giordano added five saves in 10:52 minutes of action and freshman Eunice Santiago (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) had a defensive save. Senior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) had a team-high two shots on goal.
Southern New Hampshire was led by Annemartine Christis who had a game-high three goals and two assists. Emma Peeters made two saves to earn the shutout win.
The game remained scoreless after the first quarter with McClure making two saves, Santiago recording a defensive save and Palladino forcing a Penmen defensive save.
McClure made nine more saves to open the second quarter before Carley Lovejoy scored in the 28th minute to give the Penmen a 1-0 lead. Eliza Bates added a goal less than 30 seconds later to give Southern New Hampshire a 2-0 lead at halftime.
A Christis goal in the 37th minute made it 3-0 and Zoe Demers made it 4-0 with a goal in the 40th minute. McClure closed the quarter with another save and the Penmen headed to the fourth quarter with a 4-0 lead.
Southern New Hampshire scored four goals in the fourth quarter to pull away, earning the 8-0 win.
Southern New Hampshire held a 39-7 edge in shots and a 27-3 edge in shots on goal. Southern New Hampshire held a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 9th when they host Pace at 3:30 p.m.
