MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2024) – Despite a game-high two saves from senior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the No. 10 Mercy University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision at Millersville University on Saturday afternoon at Pucillo Field.
The Mavericks (5-1-4) suffer their first loss of the season and fall to the 2023 NCAA Tournament participant Marauders (6-5) for the first time since 2002.
Mercy was led by Elvestad who had a game-high two saves to take the loss. Junior Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) added four shots and one shot on goal.
Millersville was led by Cody Scully who scored the game-winning goal and by Jake Van Vorhees who made one save to earn the shutout win.
Elvestad made a save in the 3rd minute of action to keep the game scoreless. That would be the only shot on goal in the opening half and the game was scoreless at halftime.
Elvestad stopped another shot in the 70th minute and a Hanken Tjostheim shot was stopped by Van Vorhees in the 79th minute to keep the game scoreless. Millersville scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute when Scully scored following assists from Tylen Thomas and Roy Parkyn to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Mercy could not find the equalizer and Millersville earned the 1-0 win.
Millersville held an 11-5 edge in shots and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday when they host American International at 2:30 p.m.
