DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2024) – Despite a game-high five saves from freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), the Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to ECC foe Queens College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-5-2, 3-2 ECC) see their six-game unbeaten streak come to an end and fall to the Knights (7-5-1, 3-2 ECC) for the first time since 2012. Mercy has secured their 11th straight ECC Championship berth.
Mercy was led by Becker who made a game-high five saves to take the loss. Freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) had a team-high two shots with one shot on goal.
Queens was led by Erica Petrie and Julia Ragone who both scored. Samantha Hines-Hirsch made three saves to earn the shutout win.
Both Becker and Hines-Hirsch made one save in the first half to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Queens had two shots hit the crossbar early in the second half and Becker made a save in the 57th minute to keep the game scoreless. Becker added three more saves before Petrie scored on a free kick from outside the box to give the Knights a 1-0 lead in the 72nd minute.
Ragone made it 2-0 in the 77th minute when she scored following a long shot that found its way into the goal after being misplayed by Becker.
Mercy forced Hines-Hirsch to make a pair of saves in the final 11 minutes of play but were unable to score and Queens earned the 2-0 win.
Queens held a 14-7 edge in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 2-2.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 26th when they play at Daemen at 12 p.m.
