Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a season in which they went 8-10 overall and 7-6 in NE10 play, qualifying for the NE10 Championship for the first time in program history. The Mavericks matched their school record for overall wins in a season and NE10 wins in a season. Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks have been picked a program-best ninth in the NE10 Preseason Poll with the top eight teams qualifying for the NE10 Championship. Leading the returners for the Mavericks is senior Rachel Palladino who was named Third Team All-NE10 last season after recording 14 goals, one assist, 29 points and three game-winning goals. She led the team in goals and points and set a single-season school record in points and goals. Also returning is graduate student Kelly Rosenfeld who started 18 games last season and had six goals, eight assists and 20 points. She led the team in assists and ranked third in points and goals. Graduate student Kasey Volz also returns after netting five goals and one assist in 18 starts. Junior Samantha Trickel and senior Jessica Evans are back after combining for six goals and three assists in 2023. Junior Reagan Lane also returns after posting two defensive saves last season. Junior Alexandra Giordano returns in goal for the Mavericks after going 7-9 in goal with 127 saves, a .738 save percentage and 3.15 goals-against average in 17 games.
Mercy is coming off a 7-2 loss to Adelphi on Tuesday. The Mavericks were led by freshman Charlotte Sabert who scored two goals and by junior Rebecca McClure who had a game-high 14 saves. Mercy has been led by sophomore Madison Preston who has nine points on three goals and three assists. Rosenfeld has two goals and an assist and Trickel has three goals. Freshman Charlotte Sabert has a team-high 10 points on four goals and two assists. Freshman Madison Brefka has two assists on the year and graduate student Kasey Volz has a goal and one assist. Senior Rachel Palladino has three goals, and an assist and freshman Eunice Santiago has one assist. Junior Reagan Lane has a team-high two defensive saves and Volz and Rosenfeld each have one defensive save. McClure has been named NE10 Goalie of the Week twice and is 5-2 with 49 saves and a 1.73 goals-against average. Giordano is 0-1 in goal with four saves and a .444 save percentage. Mercy is 1-5 all-time against Southern New Hampshire. The Mavericks have dropped the last five meetings to the Penmen with their lone win coming in 2015.
Scouting the Penmen
Southern New Hampshire is coming off a 7-0 win over Saint Michael's on Tuesday. The Penmen were picked fifth in the NE10 Preseason Poll after going 10-8 last season, falling in the NE10 Championship Quarterfinals. Southern New Hampshire is currently ranked No. 6 nationally in the NFHCA Top 10 Poll. The Penmen have been led by Annemartine Christis who has a team-high 14 goals and 33 points. Minke van de Poll has 11 points on five goals and an assist and Eliza Bates has two goals and four assists. Anne Wiersma has a team-high six assists and Jade Hendriks has three goals and an assist. Emma Peeters is 7-1 in goal with 48 saves, a .814 save percentage and 1.35 goals-against average.
