DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2024) – Powered by goals from juniors Anna Deutscher (Heidenheim, Germany/Monroe CC) and Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-4-1, 2-1 ECC) have won two games in a row and defeat the defending ECC Regular Season Champion Redhawks (4-5-1, 2-2 ECC) for the first time since 2021.
Mercy was led by Deutscher who recorded her second goal of the season and by Dixon who netted her team-leading seventh goal of the year. Freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) added two assists and now has a team-high-tying five assists on the year. Freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) made three saves to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Larissa Johnston who scored and by Mia Tyndell who made 11 saves to take the loss.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of play when Deutscher scored off an assist from Metzger, following two saves by Tyndell. The Mavericks forced Tyndell to make seven saves in the half and headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Roberts Wesleyan evened the score at 1-1 in the 47th minute when Kara Choate fed Johnston a through ball from beyond midfield and Johnston finished on a breakaway to tie the game.
The Mavericks quickly had an answer as Metzger fed Dixon a through ball in the 51st minute and Dixon fired the ball into the back of the net, giving Mercy a 2-1 lead.
Becker made all three of her saves down the stretch to keep the Redhawks from tying the game, giving Mercy the 2-1 win.
Mercy held an 18-11 edge in shots and a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 8th when they host Chestnut Hill at 12 p.m.
