Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hanken Tjostheim Records Game-High Three Shots as No. 10 Men's Soccer Earns 0-0 Draw Against Southern Connecticut State

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2024) – Powered by a team-high three shots from junior Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College), the No. 10 Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw against Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon in their Making Strides Versus Cancer Pink Game at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-0-4) remain unbeaten on the year and earn their first tie against the Owls (4-3-2) since 2019.

Mercy was led by Hanken Tjostheim who had a game-high three shots and by junior Nicolás Cerda (Santiago, Chile/Andree English School) who had a shot on goal. Senior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) did not face a shot on goal to earn his sixth shutout of the year.

Southern Connecticut State was led by Jose Clemente who had two shots. Devin Juan made one save to earn the shutout.

The Owls recorded four of the first five shots of the game before Cerda forced Juan to make a save in the 32nd minute. Southern Connecticut State ended the half with a pair of shots, but the game remained scoreless at halftime.

Mercy had a scoring chance in the 56th minute when Hanken Tjostheim was taken down by an Owl defender on a breakaway attempt. Following an Owl red card, Hanken Tjostheim missed the free kick just above the net to keep the game scoreless.

The Mavericks had another prime scoring chance in the 69th minute when a graduate student Benjamin Van Buren (Anderson, S.C./USC Upstate) shot hit the post and a sophomore Marcel Duffau (Santiago, Chile/Dunalastair School) shot went high.

Mercy's last strong scoring chance came in the 80th minute when a Hanken Tjostheim shot went just wide left of the net.

The game ended in a 0-0 draw with the Mavericks recording the game's only shot on goal.

Mercy held an 8-6 edge in shots and a 1-0 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
