DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2024) – Powered by goals from freshman Ana Polychroniades (Queens, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory) and sophomore Ella Gallino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 2-0 Senior Day win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks honored seniors Kayla Saavedra (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester), Amber Garcia (Corona, Calif./Chaffey College), Elizabeth Bowles (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers Montessori Academy), Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J./University of Bridgeport), Isabella Messina (Huntington Beach, Calif./Saddleback College), Logan Holley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Saddleback College) and Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (9-7-2, 4-3 ECC) snap a three-game losing streak and defeat the Spartans (3-9-3, 2-4-1 ECC) for the ninth straight time at home. Mercy has earned the #4 seed in next week's ECC Championship and will host #5 seed Roberts Wesleyan in a First Round game on Thursday, November 7th at 1 p.m.
Mercy was led by Polychroniades and Gallino who both scored their second goals of the season. Washington dished out her third assist of the year and freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) recorded her team-leading seventh assist of the year. Freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) made five saves to earn the win and post her eighth shutout of the year.
STAC was led by Catalena Robson who made a game-high eight saves to take the loss.
Becker made two saves early in the first half to keep the game scoreless. Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Polychroniades fired home a Metzger corner kick to give the Mavericks the lead. Becker made two more saves in the half, sending Mercy into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Mercy forced Robson to make six saves in the second half and a Washington shot hit the crossbar in the 83rd minute. The Mavericks tacked on an insurance goal in the 88th minute when Washington sent a cross from left to right and Gallino fired the ball into the back of the net to give Mercy a 2-0 lead. Becker made a final save late in the game to preserve the shutout and the Mavericks earned the 2-0 Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 16-9 edge in shots and a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
