Dixon and Washington Combine for Four Goals as No. 4 Seed Women's Soccer Earns 4-1 Win Over No. 5 Seed Roberts Wesleyan in First Round of ECC Championship

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2024) – Powered by two goals from both junior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and senior Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J./University of Bridgeport), the No. 4 seeded Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 4-1 win over No. 5 seeded Roberts Wesleyan University in the First Round of the East Coast Conference (ECC) Women's Soccer Championship on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-7-2) have won two games in a row and advance to Sunday's Semifinals where they will play at No. 1 seed Molloy at 12 p.m. Mercy defeats the Redhawks (5-10-1) for the second time this season and now has double-digit wins in a season for the seventh time in eight seasons.

Mercy was led by Dixon who had two goals and two assists and how has a team-high 12 goals and 32 points. Dixon now has 22 career assists, setting a school record for career assists. The previous record was 20 set by Trista Seara in 2019. Washington now has six goals and 15 points on the year. Freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) dished out two assists and now has a team-high nine assists. Freshman Ana Polychroniades (Queens, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory) recorded her first assist of the season and freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) made a career-high-tying nine saves to earn the win.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Ella White who scored and by Nicolette Knauf who made two saves to take the loss.

White gave the Redhawks an early 1-0 lead on a shot from outside the box in the 9th minute of action. Becker made three saves to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.

Dixon tied the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute when she fired home a through ball from Metzger. Becker made three saves to keep the game tied before Mercy took a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute. Dixon scored following a Metzger rebound to give the Mavericks the lead.

Washington later gave Mercy a 3-1 lead in the 64th minute following a cross from Dixon that was touched over by Polychroniades to Washington, who fired the ball into the net. Becker stopped three more shots before Washington capped off the scoring in the final minute of play, off a Dixon through ball, to make it 4-1.

Mercy led the rest of the way to earn the 4-1 win.

Roberts Wesleyan held a 16-12 edge in shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 2-2.

Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, November 10th when they play at No. 1 seed Molloy in an ECC Championship Semifinal at 12 p.m.
