Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Hosts Chestnut Hill

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2024) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy University men's basketball team dropped a 75-59 decision to Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.

The Mavericks (0-5) remain winless on the year, while the Griffins (3-4) defeat Mercy for the fifth straight time.

Mercy was led by freshman Ethan Robertson (Boston, Mass./The Winchendon School) who scored a career-high 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting with a team-high-tying six rebounds. Freshman Nathan Robertson (Boston, Mass./The Winchendon School) added a career-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting with a team-high-tying six rebounds and junior TJ Holloway (Stratford, Conn./Central Connecticut State University) scored 13 points. Sophomore Shedrach Makanjuola (Boston, Mass./Quincy College) contributed nine points and five rebounds and senior Taj Chiles (Harlem, N.Y./University of Bridgeport) had four points and a game-high six assists.

Chestnut Hill was led by Omari Salvi who had a game-high 22 points.

Chestnut Hill held an 11-6 lead at the 17:36 mark of the first half before Mercy went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-13 lead after a Nathan Robertson layup with 14:04 left in the first half. The Griffins came back on a 9-0 run to take a 22-14 lead with 11:14 left in the first half. A Holloway three and three points from Ethan Robertson cut Chestnut Hill's lead to two, 22-20, at the 8:02 mark.

A Holloway three-point play later made it 31-29 in favor of the Griffins with 1:46 left in the half. Chestnut Hill ended the half on an 8-1 run to take a 39-30 lead at halftime.

A Salvi three at the 17:09 mark of the second half made it 42-30. Mercy responded with a 6-1 run to cut the deficit to seven, 43-36, after an Ethan Robertson three-point play. Chestnut Hill scored the next five points to take a 48-36 lead before an 8-2 run by Mercy got the Mavericks to within six, 50-44, with 10:28 left after an Ethan Robertson layup.

A Holloway three with 7:29 remaining once again made it a six-point game, 58-52. The Griffins followed with a 10-0 run to increase their lead to a game-high 16 points, 68-52, with 4:08 left. Chestnut Hill led by double digits the rest of the way to earn the 75-59 win.

Mercy shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, 14.3 percent (3-of-21) from downtown and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the foul line. Chestnut Hill shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the field, 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from beyond the arc and 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from the charity stripe. Chestnut Hill held a 44-29 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Chris Watts and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, December 6th when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 8 p.m.
