Glennerster, Gonzalez and Ashline Homer as Baseball Faces Felician

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 23, 2024) – Despite home runs from graduate student Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) and sophomore Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central), the Mercy University baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision to Felician University on Friday afternoon at Crosley Field.

The Mavericks (1-5) have dropped five games in a row, while the Golden Falcons (2-8) snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win.

Mercy was led by Glennerster who went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with three runs, his first home run as a Maverick and one RBI. Ashline went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and sophomore Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 1-for-4 and graduate student Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y./Mount Saint Mary College) went 1-for-3. Freshman Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) went 1-for-5 and sophomore Diego Wirz (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) pitched the first three innings of the game with three runs allowed to take the loss. Sophomore Brian Zbytniewski (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Felician was led by Duari Genao and Jack Scrivanic who both had a home run and three RBI. Dylan Morrill pitched three innings of relief to earn the win and Jordan Savinon pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

The Golden Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. The Mavericks answered with a run in the bottom of the second on a Gonzalez leadoff home run to center field, tying the game at 1-1.

Felician retook the lead at 3-1 in the third inning following a Genao two-run home run. The Golden Falcons scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Ricky Voss recorded a sacrifice fly and Scrivanic singled home a run.

The Mavericks plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-3. Glennerster led off the inning with a home run to left field making it 5-2. Gonzalez then doubled and later scored on a McAdams single to make it 5-3.

Felician added three runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Mercy responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-6. Gonzalez reached on an error to lead off the inning and Ashline followed with a two-run home run to right field to make it 8-5. McAdams was then hit by a pitch and Sanders singled to put runners on first and second. McAdams later scored after graduate student Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) reached on an error by the third baseman, making it 8-6 after six innings.

The Golden Falcons added an insurance run in the top of the eighth to take a 9-6 lead. Mercy could not score in the seventh, eighth or ninth innings, giving Felician the 9-6 win.

Mercy had nine hits and no errors and Felician had 13 hits and three errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Adelphi for a doubleheader in Myrtle Beach starting at 4:30 p.m.
