MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 25, 2024) – Despite an RBI from sophomore Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and graduate student Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y./Mount Saint Mary College), the Mercy University baseball team dropped an 18-2 decision to Bentley University on Sunday morning.
The Mavericks (2-7) have dropped two games in a row, while the Falcons (5-2) have won four games in a row.
Mercy was led by McAdams who went 1-for-2 with an RBI and by Nolasco who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) went 1-for-2 and junior Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) went 1-for-1. Freshman Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) went 2-for-5 and junior Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) pitched the first 1.1 innings with six runs allowed to take the loss.
Bentley was led by Brendan Sencaj who went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Marc Cedrone pitched the first five innings with two runs allowed to earn the win.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on one hit. Mercy evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the second. Sophomore Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a McAdams RBI single.
Bentley exploded for eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the second to take a 9-1 lead. The Falcons added a run in the third inning to increase the lead to 10-1.
Mercy plated a run in the fourth inning to make it 10-2. McAdams walked with two outs in the inning and Nolasco followed with a double that scored McAdams to make it 10-2.
The Falcons scored two runs in the fifth, five runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to take an 18-2 lead. Mercy put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth but could not score giving Bentley the 18-2 win.
Mercy had six hits and five errors and Bentley had 19 hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 2nd when they play at Southern Connecticut State for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
