DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2024) – Powered by a home run and a game-high four RBI from sophomore Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) in game one, the Mercy University baseball team earned an 8-6 win over University of Bridgeport before falling 13-1 in game two on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-11) see their two-game winning streak come to an end with the game two loss, while the Purple Knights (2-11) snapped a four-game losing streak with the game two win.
Game 1: Mercy 8, Bridgeport 6
Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Justin Leigh leadoff home run. The Mavericks answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. Junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) and graduate student Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) singled with one out and stole second and third before Ashline recorded an RBI groundout to third, scoring Gonzalez to make it 1-1. Graduate student Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) then doubled home Giblin to make it 2-1 and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) followed with an RBI double that plated Glennerster to give Mercy a 3-1 lead. Graduate student Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y./Mount Saint Mary College) later singled home Sanders, giving the Mavericks a 4-1 lead after the first inning.
The Purple Knights scored two runs in the second inning to make it 4-3. Vin Mallon recorded an RBI single in the inning and Leigh had an RBI double. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead. Gonzalez singled with one out and later scored on another Ashline RBI groundout to make it 5-3.
The score remained 5-3 until the bottom of the fourth when Mercy scored three runs to take an 8-3 lead. Gonzalez singled and advanced to second on a balk before Giblin singled him home to make it 6-3. Ashline later hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to left field, giving Mercy an 8-3 lead.
The Purple Knights scored two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to make it 8-6. However, the Mavericks threw out the tying run at second to end the game, giving Mercy the 8-6 game one win.
Mercy was led by Ashline who went 1-for-3 with his team-leading sixth home run of the season and a game-high four RBI. Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with three runs and Giblin went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Glennerster went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Sanders went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Nolasco went 1-for-3 with an RBI and senior Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) allowed four earned runs in four innings to earn his first win of the season. Junior Vonzell Rivera (Millville, N.J./Millville) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and sophomore Brian Zbytniewski (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro) allowed one run in 1.1 innings to earn his second save of the season.
Bridgeport was led by Leigh who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Alex Springer allowed eight runs in 4.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 10 hits and one error and Bridgeport had 14 hits and no errors.
Game 2: Bridgeport 13, Mercy 1
Bridgeport scored two runs in the top of the first on a two-run double by Mallon. The Purple Knights added three more runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Mercy scored their lone run in the third inning. Freshman Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) led off the inning with a double and scored on a junior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) RBI single to make it 5-1.
Bridgeport scored three runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to take a 13-1 lead. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving Bridgeport the 13-1 game two win.
Mercy was led by Hoti who went 1-for-1 with an RBI and by Engmann who went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Giblin and Sanders both went 1-for-3. Sophomore Riley Williams (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) allowed five runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss. Sophomore Ryan Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings of relief with five strikeouts.
Bridgeport was led by Anthony Pascale who went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Brendan Palmer pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had four hits and two errors and Bridgeport had 15 hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Bridgeport at 12 p.m.
