DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 19, 2024) – Powered by eight different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy University baseball team exploded for 12 runs in the seventh inning and four runs in the eighth inning to earn a 16-3 win over Dominican University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (9-11) have won four of their last five games, while the Chargers (5-15) have dropped four of their last five games.
Mercy was led by graduate student Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs and by graduate student Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y./Mount Saint Mary College) who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Sophomore Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 2-for-4 with two runs and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Liam Padden (Bronx, N.Y./Canyon Del Oro) went 1-for-1 with three RBI and junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Graduate student Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) went 1-for-2 and sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) recorded an RBI. Junior Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) pitched six innings with two earned runs allowed to take a no-decision. Junior Jack Sullivan (Orlando, Fla./Allegany College of Maryland) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to earn his third win of the season. Seniors Joshua Alvarado (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and Lucas Prokosch (Newburgh, N.Y./Fairleigh Dickinson University) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Dominican was led by Andrew Smith who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Maverick Medina allowed five earned runs in the seventh inning to take the loss.
After a scoreless first inning, Dominican scored two runs in the second inning and one in the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The score remained 3-0 until the seventh inning when Mercy exploded for 12 runs to take a 12-3 lead. Nolasco singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second after a throwing error by the catcher. Ramirez then singled before Engmann reached after a fielding error by the pitcher to load the bases. Gonzalez then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Nolasco to score to make it 3-1. Giblin then singled through the left side, scoring Engmann and Ramirez to make it 3-3. Ashline followed with a single to load the bases before Sanders singled, scoring Gonzalez to make it 4-3. Caballero then singled to center field, scoring Giblin to give Mercy a 5-3 lead. After a Charger pitching change, Nisco drew a bases-loaded walk to score Ashline, making it 6-3. Nolasco then doubled down the left field line, allowing Caballero and Sanders to score to give Mercy an 8-3 lead. Engmann later brought home Nisco on a groundout to first, making it 9-3. Gonzalez then reached on an error by the first baseman, allowing freshman Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) to score to make it 10-3. Sanders and Caballero brought home the final runs of the inning drawing bases-loaded walks to give Mercy a 12-3 lead. A strikeout ended the inning with the bases loaded.
After Alvarado tossed a scoreless eighth inning, Mercy added four more runs to take a 16-3 lead. Junior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Giblin RBI single to make it 13-3. Ashline then singled to load the bases before Padden hit a bases-clearing pinch-hit double to put the Mavericks up, 16-3.
Prokosch pitched a scoreless ninth inning to give Mercy the 16-3 win.
Mercy had 15 hits and one error and Dominican had eight hits and four errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 22nd when they play at Staten Island for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
