SPARKILL, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2024) – Powered by 12 different Mavericks scoring and a school-record-tying seven assists from sophomore Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), the RV Mercy University women's lacrosse team earned a convincing 23-3 win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (3-6, 2-0 ECC) have won two games in a row and defeat the Spartans (3-7, 0-1 ECC) for the ninth straight time. The 23 goals scored by Mercy ties the school record for goals in a game set last season on April 18, 2023 at Georgian Court. The 20-goal margin of victory ties the largest margin of victory in school history, previously set against UDC on April 18, 2018.
Mercy was led by Mott who had a game-high eight points on a goal and a school-record-tying seven assists. Junior Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added four goals and two assists, recording her 100th career point. Freshman Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had a career-high five points on four goals and an assist and junior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and graduate student Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) both had three goals and an assist. Freshman Juliana Talenti (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had two goals and an assist and senior Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University) had a goal and two assists. Junior Isabelle Palladino (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and graduate student Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) both had a goal and an assist and senior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), junior Tatiana Moran (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and sophomore Rita-Marie Masi (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) also scored. Freshman Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) dished out an assist and junior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a game-high 10 draw controls with four ground balls and one caused turnover. Sophomore Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had eight draw controls and senior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) played the first quarter in goal with one goal allowed to earn the win. Sophomore Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) allowed two goals with one save in the second and third quarters and freshman Olivia Bradley (Commack, N.Y./Commack) played the fourth quarter in goal without facing a shot.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Rachael Paraskos, Ella Entress and Olivia Cerbo who scored. Lilah Magenheimer made 10 saves to take the loss.
Mercy scored the game's first eight goals and did not look back in cruising to the 23-3 win. Zarou scored the first goal of the game at the 13:29 mark of the first quarter, following an assist from Mott. Moussa followed with a woman-down goal with 11:35 on the clock to make it 2-0 and Wallace netted her first goal of the game with 8:32 left in the quarter to make it 3-0, leading to a STAC timeout. Following the timeout, Moussa won the draw control and scored to make it 4-0 and Rosenfeld, Hansen and Shimborske scored to make it 7-0 with 4:04 remaining in the quarter. Hansen netted the Mavericks final goal of the quarter, after a Mott assist, at the 3:33 mark to make it 8-0. A Cerbo goal with 14 seconds left in the quarter cut Mercy's lead to 8-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Corley and Moussa opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the quarter to make it 10-1. A Paraskos goal at the 12:12 mark made it 10-2 before Wallace scored again, off an assist from Hansen, to give Mercy an 11-2 advantage with 10:22 on the clock. Entress scored the final Spartan goal of the game at the 4:41 mark to make it 11-3. Moussa and Palladino closed the quarter with goals to give the Mavericks a 13-3 lead at halftime.
Erin Shimborske began the third quarter with two straight goals to give Mercy a 15-3 lead with 11:46 left in the quarter. Mott, Hansen, Wallace and Talenti tallied the final four goals of the quarter to give the Mavericks a commanding 19-3 lead after three quarters.
Talenti, Masi, Wallace and Moran scored Mercy's final four goals of the game to make it 23-3 with 2:28 remaining. The Mavericks defense held the Spartans to just one shot in the second half and five shots for the entire game on their way to the convincing 23-3 win.
Mercy held a 41-5 edge in shots, a 36-18 edge in ground balls and a 25-3 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 30th when they host Jefferson at 2:30 p.m.
