Hansen Records Team-High Six Points and Shimborske Records Game-High 11 Draw Controls as No. 17 Women's Lacrosse Hosts No. 5 Florida Southern

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 9, 2024) – Despite a team-high six points from junior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and a game-high 11 draw controls from junior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 17 Mercy University women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-13 decision to No. 5 Florida Southern College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (1-4) have dropped three games in a row with all three coming to ranked teams. The Mocs (5-3) improves to 4-0 all-time against Mercy.

Mercy was led by Hansen who had a team-high five goals and six points. Shimborske had a game-high 11 draw controls and senior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had three goals. Graduate student Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) had two goals and two assists and graduate student Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) netted three goals. Senior Carly Diolosa (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) had an assist and two caused turnovers and junior Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) also had an assist. Senior Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and sophomore Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also had an assist. Senior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made five saves in the first half to take the loss. Sophomore Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) made four saves in the second half.

Florida Southern was led by Jackie Stoller who had a game-high 11 points on seven goals and four assists. McKenzie Gaghan made a game-high 11 saves to earn the win.

The Mocs scored the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead with 13:26 left in the opening quarter. Hansen and Corley answered with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2 at the 9:59 mark. Florida Southern scored the final five goals of the quarter to take a 7-2 lead after the first quarter.

Ellie Griffin scored the first goal of the second quarter to give the Mocs an 8-2 lead with 13:25 left in the half. Two straight goals from Rosenfeld and another from Corley made it 8-5 with 8:04 on the clock. Three consecutive goals from Florida Southern to close the half gave the Mocs an 11-5 lead at halftime.

A Corley goal to open the third quarter cut the Mocs lead to 11-6 at the 13:42 mark. Goals from Kolby Cohen and Jackie Stoller made it 13-6 with 11:26 on the clock before goals from Hansen and Rosenfeld made it 13-8 with 8:53 remaining in the quarter. A Madison Tare goal made it 14-8 before two straight goals from Hansen and Shimborske made it 14-10 with 7:02 left in the quarter, leading to a Florida Southern timeout. Following the timeout, Griffin and Stoller scored the final two goals of the quarter to give the guests a 16-10 lead after three quarters.

Hansen and Shimborske opened the fourth quarter with goals to make it 16-12 with 6:22 left. Tare made it 17-12 at the 5:25 mark before Hansen netted the Mavericks final goal with 3:50 remaining to make it 17-13. Cohen scored the Mocs final goal with 2:32 left to give Florida Southern an 18-13 lead and they earned the 18-13 win.

Mercy held a 34-30 edge in shots, a 15-12 edge in ground balls and Florida Southern held a 19-15 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 16th when they play at Bloomsburg at 1 p.m.
