Moussa Records Career-High Nine Points as Women's Lacrosse Earns 17-13 Win Over Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2024) – Powered by a career-high nine points on six goals and three assists from junior Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), the Mercy University women's lacrosse team earned a 17-13 win over ECC foe Molloy University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-8, 3-0 ECC) snapped a two-game losing streak and remain undefeated in ECC play. Mercy defeats the Lions (6-6, 1-3 ECC) for the ninth time in 10 meetings.

Mercy was led by Moussa who had a career-high nine points on a career-high-tying six goals with three assists. Junior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) had three goals and freshman Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip) added two goals and one assist. Sophomore Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) scored two goals and had six ground balls and senior Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University) also scored two goals. Sophomore Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) scored a goal and had five draw controls. Graduate student Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) also scored and senior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dished out three assists. Senior Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had seven draw controls and three caused turnovers and senior Carly Diolosa (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) had three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Senior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made five saves in the first half to earn the win. Sophomore Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) stopped seven shots in the second half.

Molloy was led by Sofia Quitoni who had a team-high three goals. Mary-Kate Sweeney made a game-high 10 saves to take the loss.

Moussa gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game. Hansen, Wallace, and Moussa scored three more goals to give Mercy a 4-0 lead at the 11:32 mark of the first quarter. Back-to-back Molloy goals made it 4-2 with 9:15 on the clock. Wallace and Moussa both scored again to increase the Mavericks lead back to four, 6-2, with 2:23 remaining in the quarter. A late Alexa Amorison goal cut Mercy's lead to 6-3 after the first quarter.

An Erin Murphy goal 10 seconds into the second quarter got the Lions to within two, 6-4. Mott and Moussa recorded consecutive goals to give Mercy an 8-4 lead with 12:55 left in the half. Zarou later made it 9-4 with her first goal of the day at the 6:57 mark. Back-to-back Molloy goals made it 9-6 with 4:04 on the clock before Zarou and Brenna Signorelli traded goals to make it 10-7 Mercy at halftime.

A Quitoni goal to open the third quarter cut Mercy's lead to two, 10-8. However, the Mavericks scored the final six goals of the quarter to take a 16-8 lead after three quarters. Hansen got the run started at the 13:49 mark to make it 11-8 and Callow, Moussa, Mott, Hansen, and Corley scored the final five goals of the quarter to put Mercy up eight, 16-8, after three quarters.

Moussa's final goal of the game with 11:45 left in the fourth quarter gave Mercy their largest lead of the game, 17-8. Molloy scored the next five goals to make it 17-13 with 3:09 remaining. The Mavericks held the Lions scoreless for the final 3:09 of the game to earn the 17-13 win.

Mercy held a 42-30 edge in shots, a 25-22 edge in ground balls and a 17-15 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 12th when they host D'Youville for Senior Day at 3 p.m.
