DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2024) – Powered by 10 different Mavericks scoring, the Mercy University women's lacrosse team earned an 18-8 Senior Day and First Responders Day win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, graduate students and seniors Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), Mackenzie Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Wagner College), Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University), Savanna Spadalik (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), Ryleigh Hostinsky (Point Pleasant Borough, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough), Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University), Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield), Carly Diolosa (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) and Ryan Smith (Wantagh, N.Y./Molloy University) were recognized for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (6-8, 4-0 ECC) have won two games in a row and improve to 6-0 all-time against the Saints (4-9, 1-2 ECC).
Mercy was led by junior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) who had a game-high five goals with one assist. Hansen recorded her 100th career goal, becoming the eighth Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Junior Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added four goals and two assists. Moussa also recorded her 100th career goal, becoming the seventh Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Sophomore Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a game-high eight points on a goal and a game-high seven assists. Erin Shimborske scored two goals and Zarou and Corley both had a goal and an assist. Rosenfeld scored a goal and had four ground balls, becoming the 10th Maverick in program history to record 100 ground balls. Sophomore Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and freshmen Juliana Talenti (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip) also scored. Junior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a game-high eight draw controls with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Lopreato added seven draw controls and two ground balls and Maute played the first half in goal with one save and three goals allowed to earn the win.
D'Youville was led by Madison Handley who had a team-high three goals. Brinn Stworzydlak made 12 saves in 54:42 minutes of action to take the loss.
A Jillian Bernas goal at the 10:16 mark of the first quarter gave D'Youville a 1-0 lead. Shimborske found the equalizer with 9:00 left in the quarter after a Corley assist to make it 1-1. Corley gave the Mavericks the lead for good with 7:12 on the clock following a Zarou assist to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. Zarou scored the final goal of the quarter at the 6:52 mark, off the first assist of the day from Mott, to make it 3-1 after the first quarter.
A Shimborske woman-up goal from Moussa with 12:06 left in the half made it 4-1 and Moussa followed with her first goal of the day at the 11:31 mark to give Mercy a 5-1 lead. Madison Buck and Handley scored back-to-back goals for the Saints to make it 5-3 with 9:22 on the clock. The Mavericks tallied the final four goals of the half to take a 9-3 lead at halftime. Mott made it 6-3 at the 7:26 mark and Talenti later made it 7-3 before Hansen scored the final two goals of the half.
Moussa scored the first two goals of the third quarter to make it 11-3 with 10:55 on the clock. Callow and Hansen both added goals to increase the Mavericks lead to 10, 13-3, at the 10:00 mark. Handley made it 13-4 with 7:53 remaining in the quarter. Moussa answered with her 100th career goal to make it 14-4 with 6:54 on the clock. Hansen closed the quarter with two goals, including her 100th career goal, to give Mercy a convincing 16-4 lead after three quarters.
Rosenfeld and Wallace both found the back of the net to open the fourth quarter, giving Mercy a game-high 14-goal lead, 18-4, with 12:00 remaining. D'Youville scored the final four goals of the game to make it 18-8, but it was not enough, and the Mavericks earned the 18-8 Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 40-14 edge in shots, a 21-13 edge in ground balls and a 22-8 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 17th when they play at Dominican at 3:30 p.m.
