UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2024) – Despite a home run from junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), the Mercy University baseball team dropped a 9-3 decision to ECC foe No. 16 Molloy University on Friday afternoon at Mitchel Field.
The Mavericks (14-20, 4-5 ECC) have dropped eight of their last nine games and have dropped nine straight meetings to the Lions (23-9, 9-3 ECC).
Mercy was led by Caballero who went 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season and one RBI. Sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and graduate student Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Graduate student Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y./Mount Saint Mary College) and sophomore Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) both went 1-for-2 and graduate student Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 1-for-4. Freshman Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) pitched seven innings with six runs allowed and two strikeouts to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Matt Yip who went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Charlie Cucchiara pitched a complete game with two earned runs allowed and eight strikeouts to earn the win.
After a scoreless first inning, Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Caballero homered to left field with two outs. Molloy tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on two hits.
The Lions took a 4-1 lead in the third inning when Yip hit a three-run home run to left field.
Mercy scored a run in the top of the fourth to make it 4-2. Junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) reached on an error by the third baseman and stole second before scoring on a Glennerster double down the left field line.
The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the eighth when Molloy scored five runs on four hits to take a 9-2 lead.
Mercy scored a run in the top of the ninth to make it 9-3. Caballero started the rally with a single with two outs before Goins singled to put runners on first and second. Nisco then singled to left field, scoring Caballero to make it 9-3. The Mavericks were unable to score again, and Molloy earned the 9-3 win.
Mercy had nine hits and two errors and Molloy had eight hits and two errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Molloy for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
