Smart Homers Twice as Softball Plays at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2024) – Despite two home runs on the day from graduate student Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley), the Mercy University softball team dropped 5-2 and 4-2 decisions to ECC foe Molloy University on Friday night at Bob Klein Field.

The Mavericks (9-19, 3-7 ECC) have dropped three of their last four games, while the Lions (19-15, 7-1 ECC) have won four games in a row.

Game 1: Molloy 5, Mercy 2

Molloy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an Alex Burns two-run home run.

The Lions added a run in the bottom of the second on a Katie Hand leadoff home run to make it 3-0.

Molloy scored a run in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead.

Mercy got a run back in the fourth inning to make it 4-1. Smart homered to center field with one out in the inning to get the Mavericks on the scoreboard.

The Mavericks made it 4-2 with a run in the fifth inning. Freshman Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) led off the inning with a triple and scored on a senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) RBI single. Molloy scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2.

Mercy could not score in the sixth or seventh innings giving Molloy the 5-2 game one win.

Mercy was led by Smart who went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Sisco went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Reyer went 2-for-3 with a run. Sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) and freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) both went 1-for-3 and freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) went 1-for-4. Sophomore Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed four runs in 4.0 innings to take the loss.

Molloy was led by Burns who went 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Sophia Mariottini allowed two runs in seven innings to earn the win.

Mercy had eight hits and two errors and Molloy had eight hits and one error.

Game 2: Molloy 4, Mercy 2

Molloy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Stevie Dabbadie two-run home run.

The Lions tacked on two more runs in the third inning on a Burns two-run home run to make it 4-0.

Smart homered to left field with one out in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1.

Mercy scored another run in the fifth inning to make it 4-2. Sisco and Miller both singled with one out before Smart later singled home Sisco to make it 4-2.

The Mavericks were unable to score in the sixth or seventh innings, giving the Lions the 4-2 game two win.

Mercy was led by Smart who went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. The graduate student now has three home runs on the year. Sisco went 2-for-4 with a run and Reyer went 2-for-3. Murphy went 1-for-3 and Miller, graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) and Baker all went 1-for-4. Graduate student Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) allowed four runs in 2.1 innings to take the loss. Graduate student Alexi Benson (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) allowed no run in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.

Molloy was led by Burns who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and by Dabbadie who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and pitched 4.1 innings with two runs allowed to earn the win. Natalie Moussa pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

Mercy had 10 hits and one error and Molloy had eight hits and no errors.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Queens at 1 p.m.
