DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2024) – Powered by a team-high two home runs on the day from graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra), the Mercy University softball team dropped a 12-5 decision to ECC foe Queens College before earning a 6-5 win in game two on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (10-20, 4-8 ECC) snap a three-game losing streak with the game two win, while the Knights (11-16, 5-3 ECC) snapped a five-game losing streak with the game one win.
Game 1: Queens 12, Mercy 5
Queens took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the first to make it 2-2. Senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) singled and stole second before scoring on a freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) RBI double to make it 2-1. Franck later singled home Miller to tie the game at 2-2.
The Knights scored four runs in the second inning to take a 6-2 lead.
Mercy recorded two runs in the third inning to make it 6-4. Graduate student Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) led off the inning with a home run to right center making it 6-3. Sophomore Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) later singled and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
Queens posted three runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-4 lead.
The score remained 9-4 until the seventh inning when Queens scored three runs to take a 12-4 lead. Franck homered with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning for her 100th career RBI to make it 12-5. Mercy could not score again, and the Knights earned the 12-5 game one win.
Mercy was led by Franck who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, becoming the fourth Maverick in program history to record 100 career RBI. Smart went 1-for-3 with an RBI and now has four home runs on the year. Miller went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Sisco went 2-for-4. Freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) went 1-for-4 and Stark went 1-for-2. Sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) went 1-for-1 and graduate student Alexi Benson (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) allowed six earned runs in 3.1 innings to take the loss.
Queens was led by Caylea Campbell who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had 10 hits and two errors and Queens had 13 hits and two errors.
Game 2: Mercy 6, Queens 5
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Murphy singled and stole second before scoring on a Smart sacrifice fly.
The Mavericks added four runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Freshman Madison Haack (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a freshman Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) single to make it 2-0. Murphy then singled home junior Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law), who doubled earlier in the inning, to give Mercy a 3-0 lead. A Sisco groundout brought home Reyer to make it 4-0 and Miller singled home Murphy to give the Mavericks a 5-0 lead.
The score remained 5-0 until the fifth inning when Queens scored four runs to make it 5-4. Franck led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to right center making it 6-4.
Queens scored a run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-5, but sophomore Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) induced a double play to give Mercy the 6-5 game two win.
Mercy was led by Franck who went 1-for-2 with her team-leading 13th home run of the season. Miller went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Smart went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sisco went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Murphy went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Haack went 2-for-4 and Lula went 1-for-3. Reyer went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Secoda allowed two earned runs in seven innings to earn her fifth win of the season.
Queens was led by Campbell who went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Arianna Fracchioni allowed six runs in six innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 12 hits and three errors and Queens had six hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 16th when they host Molloy at 2:30 p.m.
