DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2024) – Despite home runs from graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra), sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) and freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y/North Rockland) in game one, the Mercy University softball team dropped 14-8 and 6-0 decisions to ECC foe Molloy University on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (10-22, 4-10 ECC) have dropped five of their last six games, while the Lions (21-15, 9-1 ECC) sweep the season series with Mercy.
Game 1: Molloy 14, Mercy 8
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Murphy led off the inning with a home run to right center.
Franck hit her 14th home run of the season to lead off the second inning, giving Mercy a 2-0 lead.
The Lions scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead.
Baker hit her first career home run to right center with one out in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-3.
Mercy took the lead back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-4 lead. Senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) led off the inning with a walk, graduate student Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) singled and sophomore Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) walked to load the bases. Baker then singled home both Sisco and Smart to give Mercy a 5-4 lead. Junior Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) then singled to load the bases before freshman Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) hit a bases-clearing double to make it 8-4.
Molloy scored four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 8-8. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The Lions scored six runs in the top of the eighth to take a 14-8 lead. The Mavericks went down in order in the bottom of the eighth, giving Molloy the 14-8 game one win.
Mercy was led by Baker who went 2-for-4 with her first career home run and three RBI. Franck went 1-for-4 with her 14th home run this season and one RBI. Murphy went 1-for-4 with her second home run of the season with one RBI. Reyer went 1-for-3 with three RBI and Smart went 2-for-4. Lula went 2-for-3 and sophomore Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed seven earned runs in 7.1 innings to take a no-decision. Graduate student Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) allowed one earned run in 0.2 innings to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Stevie Dabbadie who went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Sophia Mariottini allowed four runs in 6.2 innings to earn the win.
Mercy had nine hits and three errors and Molloy had 20 hits and no errors.
Game 2: Molloy 6, Mercy 0
Molloy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Dabbadie RBI single.
Steph Conrade made it 2-0 in the third inning when she scored on a passed ball. Katie Hand hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to make it 3-0.
Dabbadie hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the fifth inning to give Molloy a 4-0 lead. Cheralyn Dusharme hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Lions a 6-0 lead.
Mercy went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, giving Molloy the 6-0 game two win.
Mercy was led by Murphy, Sisco, Smart, freshman Madison Haack (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) and junior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) who all went 1-for-3. Graduate student Alexi Benson (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) allowed five earned runs in 4.1 innings to take the loss. Sophomore Marina Provencio (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Molloy was led by Dabbadie who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and pitched a complete game with just five hits allowed to earn the win.
Mercy had five hits and one error and Molloy had nine hits and no errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host STAC at 2:30 p.m.
