Provencio Records Win and Three Mavericks Produce an RBI in Game Two as Softball Earns Split With STAC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2024) – Powered by a complete game from sophomore Marina Provencio (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) and three different Mavericks recording an RBI in game two, the Mercy University softball team dropped a 7-6 decision to ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College in game one before earning a 5-4 win in game two on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.

The Mavericks (11-23, 5-11 ECC) snap a three-game losing streak with the game two win, while the Spartans (22-18, 10-2 ECC) drop just their second ECC game of the season.

Game 1: STAC 7, Mercy 6 (9 Innings)

St. Thomas Aquinas scored three runs in the first and two runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Mercy scored a run in the third inning to make it 5-1. Freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) singled with two outs and later scored following an error by the third baseman after senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) reached on a single.

The Spartans scored a run in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Mercy responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3. Murphy and Sisco led off the inning with singles and graduate student Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) later singled home Murphy for her 100th career hit to make it 6-2. Sisco later scored after freshman Madison Haack (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan) reached on an error by the shortstop to make it 6-3.

The score remained 6-3 heading to the final inning when Mercy scored three runs to tie the game at 6-6. Graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) got the scoring started with her 15th home run of the season down the right field line to make it 6-4. Following a pair of walks and a wild pitch, freshman Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) doubled to center field, scoring junior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) and freshman Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) to tie the game at 6-6. A flyout ended the inning and sent the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Spartans scored a run in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to give the Spartans 7-6 game one win.

Mercy was led by Franck who went 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. She now has 15 home runs on the season, tying the single-season school record set by Chelsea Methot in 2011. Smart went 1-for-4 with an RBI, recording her 100th career hit. Reyer went 1-for-5 with two RBI and Murphy went 3-for-5 with two runs. Sisco went 2-for-5 and freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) went 1-for-4. Sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) went 1-for-3 and sophomore Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) pitched all nine innings with five earned runs allowed to take the loss.

STAC was led by Eliana Raposo who went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Sarah Clancy pitched a complete game with four earned runs allowed to earn the win.

Mercy had 11 hits and four errors and STAC had 12 hits and four errors.

Game 2: Mercy 5, STAC 4

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Mercy scored a run to make it 1-0. Murphy singled with two outs and stole second before Sisco tripled down the left field line to give Mercy the lead.

The Spartans scored two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

The score remained 2-1 until the fifth inning when Mercy scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Daedra VanLuvanee (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) singled, Reyer reached on an error by the shortstop and Murphy singled to load the bases. Sisco then grounded out to second base, scoring VanLuvanee to make it 2-2. Miller then hit a two-run double to left center, scoring Reyer and Murphy to give Mercy a 4-2 lead. Smart then singled home Miller for the final run of the inning to make it 5-2.

The Spartans scored two runs in the sixth inning to make it 5-4.

Provencio retired the Spartans in order in the top of the seventh to give Mercy the 5-4 game two win.

Mercy was led by Sisco who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and by Miller who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Smart went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Murphy went 2-for-3 with two runs. Franck and VanLuvanee both went 1-for-3 and Provencio pitched a complete game with four runs and seven hits allowed to earn her first win of the season.

STAC was led by Olivia Leon who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Raposo allowed one earned run in 4.2 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had eight hits and no errors and STAC had seven hits and one error.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 20th when they host D'Youville at 12 p.m.
