DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2024) – Powered by graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) setting a new single-season school record with her 16th and 17th home runs this season, the Mercy University softball team earned 6-2 and 14-8 Senior Day wins over ECC foe D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison), Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) and Alexandra Karavias (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) and graduate students Alexi Benson (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend), Franck, Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) and Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) were honored for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (13-23, 7-11 ECC) have won three games in a row and win the season series against the Saints (9-29, 3-13 ECC).
Game 1: Mercy 6, D'Youville 2
The Saints scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Franck led off the inning with her record-setting 16th home run of the season to make it 1-1.
The Saints retook the lead at 2-1 in the fifth inning. Mercy responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-2. Freshman Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) singled and stole second before scoring on a freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) RBI single to make it 2-2. Franck later singled home Miller to give the Mavericks a 3-2 lead and sophomore Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) singled home Smart to make it 4-2. Franck scored the final run of the inning after junior Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) reached after a wild pitch following a strikeout to make it 5-2.
Mercy added a run in the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) walked to lead off the inning and stole second and third before scoring on a Miller sacrifice fly.
Benson retired the Saints in order in the seventh inning to give Mercy the 6-2 game one win.
Mercy was led by Franck who went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. She surpasses the previous single-season school record for home runs of 15 set by Chelsea Methot in 2011. Miller went 1-for-2 with two RBI and Stark went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Reyer went 1-for-3 and Benson tossed a complete game with two runs allowed and two strikeouts to earn her fourth win of the season.
D'Youville was led by Gianna Adamo who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kendal Lehnen allowed three earned runs in six innings to take the loss.
Mercy had six hits and one error and D'Youville had eight hits and one error.
Game 2: Mercy 14, D'Youville 8
Mercy scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Murphy walked and stole second before scoring on a Sisco RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0. Miller later singled home Sisco to give Mercy a 2-0 lead and Smart hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Miller to make it 3-0.
D'Youville scored two runs in the second inning to make it 3-2. Mercy got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2. Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Reyer to make it 4-2.
The Saints scored six runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-4 lead. Mercy answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back at 9-8. Reyer singled and later scored on a Murphy RBI single to make it 8-5. Sisco later singled home Murphy to make it 8-6. Miller walked before Franck hit a three-run home run over the left center field fence to give Mercy a 9-8 lead.
The Mavericks made it 10-8 with a run in the fifth inning. Stark singled to start the inning and later scored on a Reyer RBI single.
Mercy recorded four more runs in the sixth inning to take a 14-8 lead. Miller reached first following an error by the shortstop and later scored on a junior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) RBI single to make it 11-8. Sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) later hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Smart to make it 12-8. Franck later scored on a passed ball to make it 13-8 and Reyer singled home Seppala for the final run of the inning, making it 14-8.
Sophomore Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, giving Mercy the 14-8 game two win and the sweep.
Mercy was led by Franck who went 1-for-4 with three RBI and her 17th home run of the season. Murphy went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Sisco went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Miller went 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs and Smart went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Seppala went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Stark went 1-for-2. Freshman Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) went 2-for-3 and Reyer went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Marina Provencio (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) allowed five earned runs in 3.0 innings to earn a no-decision. Secoda allowed no earned runs in 4.0 innings to earn her sixth win of the season.
D'Youville was led by Adamo who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sarah Parzych allowed eight earned runs in 4.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 15 hits and three errors and D'Youville had 12 hits and three errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 23rd when they host Caldwell at 2:30 p.m.
