LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (Apr. 21, 2024) – Powered by seven different Mavericks recording an RBI and a win from junior Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon), the Mercy University baseball team earned a 16-4 win over ECC foe Lincoln University on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (18-23, 8-8 ECC) have won four games in a row and sweep the season series with Lions (11-27, 1-15 ECC).
Mercy was led by sophomore John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and his fifth home run of the season. Junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 2-for-6 with two RBI and junior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) went 4-for-6 with two RBI. Sophomore Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and sophomore Liam Padden (Bronx, N.Y./Canyon Del Oro) went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Graduate student Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Freshman Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) went 1-for-4 with two runs and sophomore Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 1-for-3 with two runs. Manzoeillo allowed two earned runs in five innings with six strikeouts to earn his third win of the season. Graduate student John Gillespie (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) pitched two scoreless innings and sophomore Riley Williams (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket) pitched one scoreless inning.
Lincoln was led by Wesley Hogan who went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Hilbert Nina De Leon allowed seven runs in five innings to take the loss.
Mercy scored four runs in the top of the first to make it 4-0. Caballero and Engmann walked to lead off the game before Glennerster singled home Caballero to make it 1-0. Ashline then singled home Engmann to make it 2-0 and Gonzalez later recorded a two-run single to give Mercy a 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks scored three more runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. Ashline was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored after an error by the centerfielder following a Hoti double to make it 5-0. Hoti then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0 and Nisco singled and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead.
Lincoln scored three runs in the fifth inning to make it 7-3.
Mercy scored a run in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead. Goins walked and scored on a Caballero double. The Mavericks added a run in the seventh inning to make it 9-2. Glennerster led off the inning with a single and scored on a Hoti double.
A Hogan home run in the eighth inning made it 9-4. Mercy exploded for seven runs in the ninth inning to take a 16-3 lead. Hoti and Gonzalez singled before Nisco hit a three-run home run to center field, making it 12-3. Goins walked and later scored on a Caballero RBI single to make it 13-3. Engmann then singled before Padden singled home both Caballero and Engmann to make it 15-3. Hoti later singled home Padden to give Mercy a 16-4 lead.
Williams tossed a scoreless ninth inning to give Mercy the 16-4 win and series sweep.
Mercy had 17 hits and three errors and Lincoln had five hits and two errors.
