DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2024) – Powered by a team-high three home runs and six RBI on the day from graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra), the Mercy University softball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Dominican University before earning an 8-2 win in game two on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (8-16) have won three of their last four games, while the Chargers (4-19) snapped a six-game losing streak with the game one win.
Game 1: Dominican 6, Mercy 3
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) walked and stole second before senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) singled to put runners on first and third. Sisco later stole second before Franck brought home Murphy on a groundout to third base, giving Mercy a 1-0 lead.
The Chargers tied the at 1-1 in the top of the fourth on a Madison Walker leadoff home run. The Mavericks regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Franck hit a leadoff home run to center field, making it 2-1.
Chloe McIntosh hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to give Dominican a 5-2 lead. Mercy got a run back in the sixth inning to make it 5-3. Freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
Dominican scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-3. Mercy could not score in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Chargers the 6-3 game one win.
Mercy was led by Franck who went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Sisco went 1-for-2 and recorded her 53rd career stolen base, setting a new school record for career stolen bases. Miller went 1-for-3 with a run and sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) went 1-for-3. Graduate student Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) allowed five earned runs in six innings to take the loss.
Dominican was led by McIntosh who went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Emily Baxter allowed three runs in six innings to earn the win. Emily Null pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
Mercy had four hits and one error and Dominican had nine hits and one error.
Game 2: Mercy 8, Dominican 2
The Chargers scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Mercy scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Miller reached on a fielder's choice before Franck smacked her second home run of the day over the left center field wall to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead.
Mercy added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman Madison Haack (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) led off the inning with a single and later scored after Murphy hit her first collegiate home run over the center field fence with two outs to give Mercy a 4-1 lead.
The Mavericks exploded for four runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 8-1. Miller led off the inning with a single before Franck sent her third home run of the day over the left field fence to make it 6-1. Senior Alexandra Karavias (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) later doubled in the inning to put a runner on second. Haack later recorded her first collegiate home run down the left field line, putting the Mavericks up, 8-1.
Sophomore Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but got a groundout to end the game, giving Mercy the 8-2 game two win.
Mercy was led by Franck who went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. The graduate student now has an ECC-best nine home runs on the year and a team-high 24 RBI. Haack went 2-for-3 with her first collegiate home run and two RBI. Murphy went 1-for-3 with her first collegiate home run and two RBI and Sisco went 2-for-3. Miller went 1-for-3 with two runs and Karavias went 1-for-1. Secoda allowed just one earned run in seven innings with six strikeouts to earn her fourth win of the season.
Dominican was led by Giovanna Salcido who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Baxter allowed four runs in five innings to take the loss.
Mercy had nine hits and one error and Dominican had 10 hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 9th when they play at Bloomfield at 3 p.m.
