BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (Apr. 9, 2024) – Powered by a combined 11 RBI and three home runs in game two from freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View), graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) and senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University), the Mercy University softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to Bloomfield College before earning a 13-6 win in game two on Tuesday afternoon at Clara D Ward Field.
The Mavericks (9-17) split their second straight doubleheader, while the Bears (13-16) have a three-game winning streak snapped with the game two loss.
Game 1: Bloomfield 1, Mercy 0
A pitcher's duel took place between Mercy starter sophomore Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Bloomfield starter Jocelyn Moody.
The Bears scored the game's lone run in the second inning when Danielle Walters hit a leadoff home run to give Bloomfield a 1-0 lead.
Mercy was unable to score, and Bloomfield earned the 1-0 game one win.
Mercy was led by freshman Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) who went 2-for-3. Freshman Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) went 1-for-2 and Sisco, sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) and junior Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) all went 1-for-3. Secoda allowed just one run and six hits with five strikeouts to take the loss.
Bloomfield was led by Walters who went 1-for-2. Moody pitched a complete game with six hits allowed and one strikeout to earn the win.
Mercy had six hits and one error and Bloomfield had six hits and no errors.
Game 2: Mercy 13, Bloomfield 6
Mercy scored two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and Sisco led off the game with singles and Murphy scored on a Miller RBI groundout to make it 1-0. Sisco later scored on a Coluccio sacrifice fly to give Mercy a 2-0 lead. Bloomfield scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the top of the second with five runs to take a 7-3 lead. Reyer and Murphy singled with two outs before Sisco reached on an error to load the bases. Miller then hit a grand slam for her first collegiate home run over the center field fence to make it 6-3. Franck then hit a solo home run to center field giving Mercy a 7-3 lead.
Bloomfield scored two runs in the third inning to cut Mercy's lead to 7-5. The Mavericks scored a run in the fourth inning to take an 8-5 lead. Reyer led off the inning with a single and stole second before scoring on a Sisco groundout.
Mercy tacked on another run in the fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Coluccio doubled to lead off the inning and later scored after Lula reached on a fielder's choice. The Bears scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-6.
The Mavericks scored two more runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-6 lead. Miller walked and Franck followed with her second home run of the game to put the Mavericks up, 11-6.
Mercy added two more runs in the seventh inning to take a 13-6 lead. Reyer singled and Murphy doubled before Sisco singled home Reyer to make it 12-6. Miller then plated Murphy on a sacrifice bunt to give Mercy a 13-6 lead.
Graduate student Alexi Benson (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the 13-6 game two win.
Mercy was led by Miller who went 2-for-3 with a career-high six RBI and her first collegiate home run. Franck went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two home runs. The graduate student now has 10 home runs in her last eight games and has 11 home runs on the year. Sisco went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs and Coluccio went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Murphy went 3-for-5 with three runs and Reyer went 3-for-4 with three runs. Freshman Madison Haack (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) went 2-for-2 and graduate student Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) allowed three runs in an inning to earn a no-decision. Benson pitched the final six innings with three runs allowed to earn her third win of the season.
Bloomfield was led by Raelyn D'Onofrio who went 1-for-3 with three RBI. Jillian Holmes allowed two earned runs in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 15 hits and no errors and Bloomfield had eight hits and three errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 12th when they play at Molloy at 3:30 p.m.
