Caballero Homers and Records Game-High Four RBI as Baseball Hosts D'Youville for Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 4, 2024) – Despite a home run and a game-high four RBI from junior Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), the Mercy University baseball team dropped a 7-4 decision to ECC foe D'Youville University on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, graduate students Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and Ryan Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) and seniors Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y./Mount Saint Mary College), Joshua Alvarado (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders), Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose), Lucas Prokosch (Newburgh, N.Y./Fairleigh Dickinson University), Gaetano Pennisi (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), Gabriel Soto (Tucson, Ariz./Mesabi Range College) and Nelson Perez Jr. (Miami, Fla./Sussex County CC) were recognized for their contributions to the program.

The Mavericks (19-29, 9-14 ECC) have dropped six games in a row, while the Saints (29-17, 18-5 ECC) have won 11 games in a row.

Mercy was led by Caballero who went 2-for-5 with his second home run of the season and four RBI. Ramirez and junior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) both went 1-for-3. Junior Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) allowed four earned runs in seven innings to take the loss. Dieguez pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

D'Youville was led by Billy Morris who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Mihir Manerikar pitched five innings with two runs allowed to earn the win. Zach Penner pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the save.

The Saints scored two runs in the second inning and a run in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Mercy inched closer with two runs in the third inning to make it 3-2. Ramirez walked to lead off the inning and Caballero later homered down the left field line to get the Mavericks within one, 3-2.

D'Youville added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-2 lead.

The score remained 5-2 until the seventh inning when Mercy scored two runs to make it 5-4. Junior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Glennerster then walked and Hoti advanced to third after a flyout. Freshman Joey Bodin (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) then walked to load the bases before Caballero singled to center field, scoring both Hoti and Glennerster to make it 5-4.

D'Youville scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to make it 7-4. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, giving D'Youville the 7-4 win.

Mercy had four hits and one error and D'Youville had 12 hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host D'Youville at 9:30 a.m.
