Dixon, Washington and Metzger Lead Women's Soccer to 3-1 Win Over Georgian Court in Home Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2024) – Powered by a game-high four points from junior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and goals from senior Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J./University of Bridgeport) and freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 3-1 win over Georgian Court University in their 2024 home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (1-2) earn their first win of the season and hand the Lions (2-1) their first loss of the season.

Mercy was led by Dixon who recorded her second goal of the season and had a game-high two assists. Washington netted her first goal of the season and Metzger tallied her first collegiate goal. Freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) made two saves to earn her first collegiate win.

Georgian Court was led by Abby Kennelly who scored and by Delaine Wilkinson who made a game-high seven saves to take the loss.

The Mavericks wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Dixon fired a ball into the upper right corner of the net in just the 6th minute of action to give Mercy an early 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the 13th minute when Dixon crossed the ball over to Washington in the box and Washington fired the ball into the lower right corner of the goal to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Mercy made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute when Metzger scored her first collegiate goal, shooting the ball into the lower right corner, after another Dixon assist.

The Lions scored their lone goal of the game in the 64th minute to make it 3-1. Mercy's backline held Georgian Court scoreless for the remainder of the game to give the Mavericks the 3-1 win.

Mercy held a 14-5 edge in shots and a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercy also held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 14th when they host Felician at 2 p.m.
