DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2024) – Powered by four different Mavericks scoring, the Mercy University field hockey team earned a 4-1 win over D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-1) start 2-1 for the first time since 2022 and hand the Saints (2-1) their first loss in program history.
Mercy was led by freshman Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) and sophomore Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) who each recorded their first collegiate goals and assists. Senior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and graduate student Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) both added their first goals of the season and junior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) made seven saves to earn the win.
D'Youville was led by Alexis Schleef who scored and by Hayden Herbold who had a game-high 10 saves in 56:31 minutes of action to take the loss.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute of action when Sabert fired home a rebound of her original shot that was stopped by a D'Youville defender, giving the Mavericks the early lead. Mercy held a 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter with McClure making two saves in the frame.
The Mavericks forced Herbold to make four saves in the second quarter, but the score stayed 1-0 in favor of Mercy heading into halftime.
Palladino gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute when Preston fed a through ball to the senior and Palladino found the back of the cage. Schleef made it 2-1 in the 43rd minute following a penalty stroke goal. Mercy wasted little time in getting the goal back as Sabert fed a ball to Preston after Sabert's original shot was stopped by Herbold and Preston scored to give the Mavericks a 3-1 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
McClure made three more saves early in the fourth quarter to keep the score 3-1. Volz gave the Mavericks a 4-1 lead following a penalty stroke goal in the 52nd minute. McClure made one more save to keep D'Youville from scoring again and Mercy held on for the 4-1 win.
Mercy held a 20-11 edge in shots and a 17-8 edge in shots on goal. D'Youville held an 8-7 edge in corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Saint Michael's in their NE10 opener at 1 p.m.
