DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2024) – Powered by a game-high two goals from graduate student Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), the Mercy University field hockey team earned a 4-2 win over Saint Michael's College in their NE10 opener on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-1, 1-0 NE10) have won two games in a row and start 3-1 for the first time since 2022. Mercy wins their NE10 opener for the second straight year and defeat the Purple Knights (0-4, 0-1 NE10) for the third straight time.
Mercy was led by Rosenfeld who scored her first two goals of the season. Junior Samantha Trickel (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades) and sophomore Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) both netted their second goals of the season. Freshmen Madison Brefka (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) and Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) and graduate student Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) all added an assist. Junior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) made six saves to earn her third win of the season.
Saint Michael's was led by Bridgie Loughlin and Allie Medeiros who both scored a goal. Joelle Cameron made a game-high 25 saves to take the loss.
The Purple Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute of play following a Medeiros goal. Rosenfeld tied the game at 1-1 in the 7th minute after firing home a rebound of a Preston shot.
Loughlin made it 2-1 in the 10th minute and Saint Michael's headed into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead.
Trickel tied the score at 2-2 in the 25th minute after Volz fed her a pass after a Mercy penalty corner. Rosenfeld gave the Mavericks a 3-2 lead in the 29th when Sabert fired a pass from left to right and Rosenfeld fired the ball into the lower right corner of the cage. Mercy headed into halftime with a 3-2 lead.
McClure made two saves in the third quarter to keep the Mavericks ahead 3-2 heading to the fourth quarter.
Preston scored an insurance goal for Mercy in the 48th minute when Brefka found the sophomore in front of the cage, after a Mavericks corner, and Preston fired the ball into the cage to make it 4-2.
Mercy's defense held Saint Michael's without a shot in the fourth quarter to secure the 4-2 win.
Mercy held a 38-10 edge in shots and a 32-8 edge in shots on goal. Mercy also held a 20-9 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 18th when they play at Molloy at 4 p.m.
