Trickel and Sabert Score as Field Hockey Earns 2-1 Win at Molloy

SEAFORD, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2024) – Powered by goals from junior Samantha Trickel (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades) and freshman Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland), the Mercy University field hockey team earned a 2-1 win over NE10 foe Molloy University on Wednesday afternoon at Cedar Creek Park.

The Mavericks (4-1, 2-0 NE10) have won three games in a row and start 2-0 in NE10 play for the second straight year. Mercy is off to their best start since 2022 when they also started 4-1. The Mavericks defeat the Lions (1-3, 0-1 NE10) for the ninth straight time.

Mercy was led by Trickel who scored the game-winning goal and now has a team-high three goals on the year. Sabert netted her second goal of the season and graduate student Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) added her first assist of the season. Junior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) played the first half in goal to earn the win.

Molloy was led by Devin Harkins who scored a goal and by Kayla Lipscomb who had a game-high 11 saves to take the loss.

The score remained 0-0 heading into the 10th minute of action after Mercy forced Lipscomb to make four saves and a sophomore Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) shot hit the post. Sabert gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute with her second goal of the season. Mercy headed into the second quarter with a 1-0 lead.

Lipscomb made three more saves before Trickel scored in the 26th minute to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. Rosenfeld had her shot originally stopped before finding Trickel, who finished to make it 2-0. Mercy headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead without allowing a Molloy shot.

Molloy made it 2-1 in the 32nd minute after Harkins scored following a Catherine Amini penalty corner.

That would be the only shot Molloy would record for the entire game and the Mavericks held on for the 2-1 win.

Mercy held a 20-1 edge in shots and a 13-1 edge in shots on goal. Mercy also held a 12-3 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 25th when they host Molloy at 3 p.m.
