ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2024) – Despite a game-high-tying four saves from freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), the Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at ECC foe Molloy University on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (3-4-1, 1-1 ECC) have dropped two games in a row and fall to the Lions (2-4, 1-0 ECC) for the first time since 2021.
Mercy was led by Becker who made a game-high-tying four saves to take the loss. Freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) had a team-high two shots on goal and three shots.
Molloy was led by Jana Strait who scored two goals and by Elyse Munoz who made four saves to earn the win.
Metzger and sophomore Angelina Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) forced Munoz to make three saves in the 14 minutes of action. The score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.
Becker made two saves to open the second half, but Strait scored in the 55th minute off a rebound, to give Molloy a 1-0 lead.
The Lions made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Strait scored again, following a header after an Isabella Muro assist.
Munoz made a final stop on a freshman Ana Polychroniades (Queens, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory) shot in the 85th minute to preserve the shutout, giving Molloy the 2-0 win.
Molloy held a 10-8 edge in shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 1-1.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 2nd when they host New Haven at 3 p.m.
