DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2024) – Powered by a game-high two goals from senior Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 4-0 win over University of New Haven on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-4-1) snap a two-game losing streak and defeat the Chargers (3-5-1) for the fourth straight time.
Mercy was led by Schwenkler who scored a career-high two goals. Freshman Ana Polychroniades (Queens, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory) scored her first collegiate goal and senior Elizabeth Bowles (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers Montessori Academy) added her first goal of the season. Freshman Alyssa Santiago (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) dished out her first collegiate assist and senior Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J./University of Bridgeport) added her first assist of the season. Junior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) recorded her team-leading fifth assist of the year and junior Anna Deutscher (Heidenheim, Germany/Monroe CC) produced her first assist as a Maverick. Junior Ella Brower (Huntington Station, N.Y./The College of Saint Rose) contributed her fourth assist of the season. Freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) made two saves to earn the shutout win.
New Haven was led by Jordan Galica who made a game-high nine saves.
A Schwenkler shot in the 8th minute hit the left post and a Santiago shot was stopped by a Charger defender to keep the game scoreless. Galica made three saves to keep the game scoreless heading into the 25th minute of action. Mercy broke the scoreless tie in the 26th minute when Schwenkler headed in a pass from Santiago and Brower after a corner kick to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
Polychroniades made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute with her first career goal after a Washington pass, following a Mercy corner. Bowles later gave the Mavericks a 3-0 lead in the 66th minute when she fired home a Dixon pass into the left corner of the net.
Schwenkler capped off the scoring for Mercy in the 73rd minute when she headed in a Deutscher corner kick to give the Mavericks a 4-0 lead. The Mercy backline held New Haven scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn the 4-0 win.
Mercy held a 23-4 edge in shots and a 15-2 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 5th when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
