Salvador and Dixon Score as No. 16 Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Win Over Staten Island on Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — Powered by goals from freshman Camila Salvador (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) and senior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the No. 16 Mercy University Women's Soccer Team earned a 2-0 win over ECC foe College of Staten Island on Senior Day in a Making Strides Versus Cancer Pink Game on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, Mercy honored graduate students and seniors Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin), Stacy Avendano (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King), Ella Brower (Huntington Station, N.Y./College of Saint Rose), Anna Deutscher (Heidenheim, Germany/Monroe CC), Dixon, Emma Best (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), Maleah Tarin (Eastvale, Calif./Chino Hills) and Rita-Marie Masi (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) for their contributions to the program.

The Mavericks (12-1-2, 4-0-2 ECC) have won two games in a row and defeat the Dolphins (3-9-2, 1-4-1 ECC) for the fifth straight time. Mercy has secured a bye to the Semifinals of the ECC Championship.

Mercy controlled the first half with a commanding offensive effort, culminating in a goal by Salvador in the 35th minute. Their aggressive approach resulted in 13 shots, with six saved by Staten Island's goalkeeper, Oksana Zahirna. The Mavericks maintained a 1-0 lead at halftime, showcasing their attack through repeated attempts and corner opportunities.

Mercy dominated the second half with relentless pressure, culminating in a penalty kick goal by Dixon in the 78th minute. The Mavericks fired off numerous shots, with sophomore Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and Salvador each testing Zahirna, who made crucial saves to keep Staten Island in the game. The Mavericks capitalized on set pieces, earning multiple corner kicks, which consistently threatened the Dolphins' defense. The game ended with Mercy leading 2-0.

Salvador scored one goal and led the team with four shots, three of which were on target, including the game-winner. Dixon contributed a goal and took seven shots, hitting the target four times. Metzger was active offensively with nine shots, three of which were on goal. Sophomore Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) recorded a shutout with one save over 90 minutes.

Zahirna stood out for the Dolphins with 18 saves, facing 33 shots and allowing only 2 goals. Caitlyn Thompson contributed offensively with two shots, including one on goal.

Mercy held a 33-3 edge in shots, a 20-1 edge in shots on goal and a 12-1 edge in corner kicks.

The next challenge for Mercy is set as they welcome Franklin Pierce University to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., on October 29. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
