DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — Despite a career-high 23 saves from senior Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University), the Mercy University Field Hockey Team dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 8 Assumption University on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, McClure, Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), Samantha Trickel (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades), and Jessica Evans (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) were honored for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (5-12, 4-8 NE10) end their season dropping four of their last games, while the Greyhounds (12-5, 11-1 NE10) win the NE10 Regular Season Championship.
Assumption put pressure early in the first quarter with multiple shots on target, but McClure remained steadfast, making crucial saves, including two from Julia Carbone and one each from Daisy Stone and Taylor Tory. Mercy responded with a late opportunity as sophomore Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) fired a shot, only to be stopped by Assumption's goalkeeper, Paige Gillette. The quarter closed with both teams scoreless, with the Mavericks effectively holding off Assumption's advances.
The second quarter began with strong defensive plays from Mercy, as McClure made two crucial saves against shots from Assumption's Nova Rijks and Mieke Rentsch. Despite Mercy's efforts to maintain the scoreline, Assumption broke through with a goal by Stone at 24:40, giving the visitors the lead. Later in the quarter, Evans attempted to level the score with a shot on goal, but it was saved by Gillette. Assumption extended their lead with a late goal from Marta Brzoska, assisted by Caroline Mastergeorge, with just over a minute left in the quarter. The quarter closed with Mercy trailing 2-0.
Mercy faced a challenging third quarter as Assumption's offense broke through early. Despite a strong defensive effort, with McClure making several key saves, Mercy conceded a goal to Chloe Kaeller at 35:10, assisted by Rentsch, pushing Assumption's lead to 3-0. Assumption continued to apply pressure, and at 41:20, Stone scored with an assist from Carbone, extending the lead to 4-0. Assumption capitalized on a penalty stroke by Rijks, making it 5-0. In the final minutes, Assumption added one more goal at 44:34 by Rijks, assisted by Stone, concluding the quarter with a 6-0 scoreline. Mercy's defense, led by McClure's numerous saves, worked tirelessly but was unable to stem the offensive tide before the quarter ended.
The fourth quarter began with Mercy's defense under pressure from Assumption's offense. McClure was crucial in goal, making multiple saves, including a key stop against Giada Broccoli at the 48:31 mark and another against Julia Legere shortly after. Junior Kate Lynne Conklin (Greenvale, N.Y./Franklin Pierce University) also contributed with a defensive save on a shot by Brzoska. Mercy's defense continued to hold strong despite Assumption's aggressive play. McClure added several more saves, including back-to-back stops on shots by Riley Tepper and Hailey Doherty. Despite Assumption's attempts through penalty corners and multiple shots on goal, Mercy kept them scoreless in the quarter. The game concluded with a final score of Assumption 6, Mercy 0.
McClure made a career-high 23 saves in goal, providing a critical defensive effort despite the team's loss. The 23 saves are the most by a Maverick goalie since Julia Amell made 25 saves against Assumption on September 6, 2015. Sabert delivered one shot on goal, maintaining pressure on the opposing defense. Evans also registered one shot on goal, contributing to the offensive attempts. Conklin and sophomore Eunice Santiago (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) added defensive saves.
Rijks led with two goals on four shots, including a penalty score, showcasing her accuracy with all attempts on target. Stone also made a significant impact, contributing two goals and an assist, with one tally being the game-winner. Her five shots included four on target. Kaeller capitalized on her only shot, finding the back of the net. In goal, Gillette secured a shutout, recording two saves across 60 minutes of play.
Assumption held a 40-2 edge in shots, a 31-2 edge in shots on goal and an 11-0 edge in penalty corners.
