WILMINGTON, Del. – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy University Men's Basketball Team dropped a 96-74 decision at Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday night.
The Mavericks (2-9) fall to 0-5 all-time against the Lightning (7-4).
The game commenced with Mercy establishing an early 10-0 lead, highlighted by a three-pointer from freshman Jeffrey Mulhern (Duanesburg, N.Y./Duanesburg) at the 16:44 mark. However, Goldey-Beacom responded robustly, fueled by Justin Allen's scoring, which contributed to a 13-point advantage by 1:47 remaining in the first half. The Mavericks struggled with turnovers, committing 12 in the half, which allowed Goldey-Beacom to capitalize on fast-break opportunities. Despite a late flurry, including a layup by junior Derek Long (Milford, Conn./Deerfield Academy) with one second remaining, Mercy trailed 40-32 at the end of the half.
Goldey-Beacom extended their lead to secure a decisive victory over the Mavericks with a final score of 96-74. The second half saw Goldey-Beacom maintain their momentum, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Tre Powell at the 5:41 mark, pushing their advantage to double digits. Mercy's efforts included Long's contribution of a three-point play at 5:53, but it was not enough to close the gap. Goldey-Beacom's Anthony Akande and Allen were instrumental in extending the lead, with Allen's fast-break dunk in the final minutes sealing the game.
Sophomore Kohen Rowbatham (Slidell, La./University of New Orleans) led Mercy with a team-high 21 points, converting 9-of-17 field goals and adding four assists. Long posted a season-high 16 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line, and recorded three steals.
